Jay-Z to blame for low Glastonbury demand

Rapper Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter's headline slot at Britain's Glastonbury Festival has caused a downturn in ticket registrations for this summer's event, according to organiser Michael Eavis.

Eavis admits demand has waned - based on the numbers of those applying for tickets early - but blames this on his decision to assign an artist of "middle range" popularity to a headline spot, as opposed to festival crowd pleasers such as Radiohead, Coldplay or Oasis.

Eavis says, "There's not as many as last year because we haven't got the super, big, big, big sort of headlining act anymore. We've gone for something middle range, although Jay-Z is huge in America.

"But it's not like Radiohead or a Muse or a Coldplay or an Oasis, is it? So we didn't expect the demand to be quite as high."

Then maybe they should get some of the underground stuff above ground, because folk like me who only get to hear the mainstream shit have no interest in looking any deeper into the genre because of the garbage we do get exposed to.....make sense?

I hope that was not an attempt at sarcasm, because it's no secret that when it comes to music the Europeans beat the US at every level.

europe may have a strong sense of fashion, but the long running drought in hip hop notwithstanding, US = hip hop.  Europe = techno electronica.  there's little reason for hip hop to resonate in most of europe - other than in a fashionable sense,   jay-z may not be dominating the charts and clubs like in the late 90's early 00's but his tour w/ mary j. blige is selling extremely well in the us.  this was a mistake by michael eavis more than anything - going away from the glastonbury wheelhouse.  still, it seems accurate that hip hop looks dead (although its probably only sleeping).

Then how come whenever I'm in Europe, all I hear is horrible Eurotrash disco?

I'm sure having Neil Diamond as the Sunday night headliner isn't helping sales much either.

For me I feel musically I am more of UK citizen. I don't think they fall for the hype game as much as us Americans. I also think they are more prone to try new music then we are. Jay-Z is ok but he is hyped up too much.
