Question about XP
« on: October 17, 2003, 02:34:00 pm »
Say a friend of mine has an HP with Windows 98 as it's OS.  Would an XP reinstall disc for a Dell Laptop work on the HP?

 Thanks.

Is it an upgrade or is it the factory CD that came with the HP?

I may be having a brainfart but if I remember correctly, I am not sure that it will, it is not just a windows disk, I think it has all the dell crap on it, I know that is how it was with Compaq but I have not used my Dell reinstall disk so not sure.

Is the cd blue or green and Dell branded (#1) or is silver and snazzy and Microsoft branded?  Dell used to ship their computers with Microsoft installation media (#2) but somwhere along the line started shipping them with these dell branded disks.  If you have #2 it will mos def work so long as you have the product key.  I never tried #1 so I can't be sure.

I believe it's just the XP disk.  It's the factory CD that came with the Dell.   The other Dell crap is on other disks.  However, it does say Reinstallation CD Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Including Service Pack 1.

It's Dell branded.  It also says "Only use this CD to reinstall the operating system on a Dell computer".   Either that's true, or it's just to scare people from using it on other computers.

When did the dysfunctional yet lovable 9:30 Club music forum turn into geektech.net?

Hey Thirsty,

beware of the fact that all versions of xp want to be activated and as such report the cd key and the mac address of the machine to which the are associated.  if the cd key matches a previous  entry and the mac address(the unique identifier for the network card in your computer)  then ther may be some dancing with the spa folks
