21+ Unless Noted

Can one of you DC-ians explain to me what this means for shows posted on the Velvet Lounge's site?  Does it mean they're subject to change, or...?  One of the bands I've been wanting to see for a very long time is playing there in October and the show is listed as such, but I'll still be a few months shy of 21 at the time.

Perhaps Snailhook can weigh in on this one; but as far as the 9:30 Club goes, if we are having a 21 + show, a few months shy is till under 21.

Oh yeah, I'm sure that's true.  I just noticed they have some shows listed as 21+ and some as "21+ Unless Noted" and I didn't know if there was a difference.

Generally speaking, it means that all shows are 21+. Occassionally, a venue will have a show where they are legally allowed to admit those under 21. Without getting into the details of how and why that works, when they do, they will list for that given show something along the lines of "All Ages" or "18+". Sounds like it's the venue's way of saying that they are mostly a 21+ venue but letting the kiddies know that they should always keep their eyes out on the venue for those odd occassions where they are allowed to bend the rules a bit.
 
 Maybe for that night, they are in the process, or considering, making it an all ages show but nothing to date has cleared yet. Don't know. But as Eddie said, wait for Snail to weigh in because he's the ultimate authority here with anything Velvet Lounge related. He'll set you straight.

Yep, it was great. Nothing like having a brew or 3 at the student union freshmen year.

Sorry about your luck. It's all just the luck of the draw. I couldn't have picked a better era to come of age in. If I'd been born 10 years sooner, Id'a probably been dead by 30, one way or another.

you're not looking hard enough, then. i've done four matinee shows since last year, and they've all been all ages. i even did some all ages night shows last year until the city sent a letter to us telling us we had to apply to get a license to have all ages shows because of the curfew law. essentially, kids under 18 have to be off the streets -- or not in venues serving alcohol -- by 11pm unless the venue has a certain license. perhaps eddie knows about this. the velvet owners didn't want to pursue this license, considering that barely any under-18 kids come to our shows anyway. in case you're wondering, a lot of 18-21 kids do show up.
 
 sonicyouth42, which show do you want to see? if it says 21+ unless noted, it means i haven't officially decided whether it's going to be 18+ or 21+. chances are it will be 18+. we are gradually moving towards making most shows 18+ and attempting to perfect a system where underage kids can enjoy shows while not making it a hassle for us. unlike certain other dc venues, i actually care about dc's youth and do everything i can to get them into shows, but it is a risk that we must pay careful attention to.

And all this time I thought "21+ Unless Noted" meant it would be okay as long as they had a note from Mom, and a picture of their mom to show the guy at the door...
