Timberlake as Rotten?
« on: May 28, 2004, 02:38:00 pm »
I guess they don't want anyone to go see this movie...  Of course the denials have already started. i.e. he was considered not yet cast blah blah blah.

What Sex Pistols fan in their right mind would see such a movie. And Justin's fan wont see it either.

 Mind if I hurl!!!

 Ananova:
 Justin to play Johnny Rotten?

Johnny Rotten says he would pick Justin Timberlake to play him in a new film based on his autobiography.

Johnny says that when he met Timberlake he agreed to play the former Sex Pistol as long as Rotten stays away from the set.

Rotten, now using his real name, John Lydon, said he felt sorry for the former *NSYNC star for being "Britneyised".

Lydon added that he has given the green light for the Hollywood version of his book, No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs.

In brief: Lydon wants Timberlake for Rotten role

John Lydon wants Justin Timberlake to play him in the forthcoming film version of his autobiography. The former Sex Pistol, known as Johnny Rotten in his punk heyday, said Timberlake had agreed to the request provided Lydon stays away from the film set. Lydon's book No Irish, No Blacks, No Dogs, is being made into a film by Penelope Spheeris, the Wayne's World director. Spheeris currently working on the Janis Joplin biopic The Gospel According to Janis, starring pop singer Pink.

Ever read that book?  Very good read.  I'm a big Lydon fan.  He's got guts.  But I don't know about this Justin Timberlake thing.  Sounds like his style though, doing the exact opposite of what everyone thinks he would do.

On a similar note I read that Pink is to play Janis Joplin in an upcoming bigraphical movie.

From Entertainment Weekly:

Battle of the Biopics  - A-listers star in competing films about their favorite legends by Missy Schwartz Allison Hope Weiner

She lived fast, sang her heart out, and OD'd at 27. Now, more than 30 years later, Janis Joplin is one hot Hollywood heroine. Renee and Pink (no last name needed; no last name period) are playing the raspy-voiced rocker in two separate biographies. The pair of pics represent the latest in Hollywood groupthink, with studios cueing up dueling projects on warriors, authors, and shorties. If history is any indication -- remember Frida Kahlo? -- one project will self-destruct. Here's a breakdown:

 1 Janis Joplin

FAVORITE The Gospel According to Janis, starring Pink

Even with the rights to Joplin's music and the Joplin family seal of approval, producers couldn't get this party started till pop wild child Pink signed on last week. Recalls producer Peter Newman of his first meeting with the singer: ''She got six inches from my face and said, 'There is no f -- -ing person in the world who can play Janis Joplin other than me.''' One screen test later, he was convinced. Directed by Penelope Spheeris (Wayne's World), the pic starts production in Louisiana and Canada this summer. ''Pink's got the acting ability and that element of being on the edge,'' says Newman. ''It's also scary how close her vocal performances are to Janis'.''

UNDERDOG Paramount's Piece of My Heart, starring Renee Zellweger

In development for eight years, Heart seemed to get the jolt it needed when Zellweger, a Joplin fan from the singer's home state of Texas, signed on to produce and star last June. But with Zellweger shooting The Cinderella Man opposite Russell Crowe this summer, a start date is a long way off. (Paramount declined to comment.) Plus, producers have rights to just one major Joplin hit (the title track), so it's unclear how they'll handle concert scenes.

BOTTOM LINE Pink may be a thespian newbie, but she's no stranger to rock & roll.

Good God I hate to say it but you just might be right.  Either way I'll line up to see it.

i always felt sorry for johnny...
he was such a big part of the punk scene- yet, due to unscrupulous management, he never got much compensation - so he's basically broke.

as much as i hate timberlake, i'd welcome any opportunity for rotten to make some $$... and having an incredibly popular douche portray him on the big screen would prolly pay off big time.

sorry johnny - it's ok to be a whore at our age

Sure he made some $$ on the last few tours, but almost any sane person (at least in my insular little universe) would agree that Lydon pretty much got the shaft and didn't get his due.

And good point filthypit.  Another reason for me to line up to see this.

i dunno unless rotten is getting a percentage of the film reciepts i don't see him getting anymore on the project other than the intial profits from the selling of the book rights.

personally i don't see the point of having JT learn the accent in order to sell the film.  it's not going to appeal to a wide release audience like "bridgets jones diary" so attaching a known celeb to the project isn't going to sell it better.  plus wouldn't this be JT's first foray into movies?  JT being in this movie wont draw his fans in and will turn away Sex Pistols fans.

Get some unknowns in and make it more about the story than whose playing the parts...

I doubt Mr. Rotten would get a percentage of the box office receipts. More likely, he would get some sort of flat rate payment for the use of the autobiography. So he probably wouldn't benefit from greater ticket sales. More likely your ticket dollars would go do Mr. Disney or Mr. Weinstein than they would Mr. Rotten.

Though your sentiments are noble. Mr. Rotten does seem like such a fine human being.
