Dandy Warhols
« on: July 29, 2008, 02:24:00 pm »
Have listened to their new one a few times now, and I just don't understand this band. They totally cop the 'rock star' pose, with their CD booklets jammed with page after page of fake aren't-we-so-def "cameo" photos, and they couldn't possibly dress more hipster-by-numbers.

Plus, they produced, early in their career, some truly great, catchy pop songs. Hell, they managed even to make a great album, which I'd say Urban Bohemia is or at least is close to being.

So why are they releasing albums that are virtually hookless? I defy anyone except xneverwherex to sing one song from Odditorium. And the new one just seems like an exercise in hookless groove. I kinda like it, but I've now listened to it straight through about five times and I couldn't hum a single track from it.

What happened? This is not a Radiohead type of band, trying to make art and refusing to conform. This is the Dandy Warhols, who seemed like they'd kill a baby lamb to achieve rock stardom. What's their plan here with these almost drone-y albums?

hahaha thanks relaxer.  ;)  yeah i sometimes wonder what happened, but i gotta tell you .... their new album is just brilliant. i could listen to it nearly as much as some of their earlier ones. but by far i think 13 tales is pure genius, and i just love come down...

the other albums not so much, and the fans seemed to really despise some of that stuff but im loving the new one. and cant wait to see them. and courtney is the ultimate hipster  ;)

I largely agree with Relaxer.  Urban Bohemia is fantastic.  The two albums preceding it were pretty great as well.  Everything since has been pretty weak.  Monkey House was certifiably horrid.  Odditorium had a couple of really catchy songs, but was 80% crap.  I haven't heard the new one, but my expectations are low.

All that being said, I will definitely be at their show in September.  That faux rock star posing is part of their appeal, to me at least.  I mean, any guy that names himself Courtney Taylor-Taylor definitely has his tongue firmly implanted in his cheek.

i saw these guys about 10 years ago now at the 930 club.. this was before even the as cool as kim deal album which i really like but can't remember name of to save my life.. urban bohemia i thought was a step down and the rest is just pathetic..

but the early stuff..man that was some cool shit..

anyways they opened up for love and rockets- one of my favorite bands- and as much as i like l&r and i thought they were cool that night (very! i think they opened up with ying yang the flower potman..)- dandy warhols blew them off the stage..

i usually miss the opener but this was a rare case where i didn't and they were good

i just don't understand what they're up to lately

I'm gonna go wih hutch on this one. First 2 releases I thought were incredible. 13 tales was good but once they got corporate support and an MTV video, it's been all downhill. I still like them but they are and always have been BJM wannabees with their trust funds acting like they're slummin. The movie Dig! proved that beyond dispute.
I'd still see em any chance I got. They put on a good show and they got a ton of material to draw from. Don't forget the Black album. Another fantastic release IMHO.
Azaghal, I doubt seriously you'll be impressed with the new one.

I am hoping that they finally release The Dandy Warhols Are Sound. Ive heard most the songs off of it. And The Black Album is EXCELLENT!

 From their messageboard re: TDWAS
it's essentially the original version of "welcome to the monkey house," the much darker/heavier sounding one that crapitol didn't want released. the tracklist went as follows (and i hope they keep it this way, not like the 11 out of 14 songs that were released as "the black album"):

(you come in) burned, scientist, we used to be friends, last high, the dope, love me lovely, i am over it, heavenly, plan a, rock bottom, i am sound, insincere, pete international spaceport
