Montreal - Tips? Tidbits? Strippers?
« on: June 22, 2005, 11:11:00 am »
Ok, that last one was sort of a joke, but do any of you have any advice on some things to see on a 3 day weekend in Montreal?  We're heading up there this weekend for a bachelor party, and I figured some advice might be nice.  Thanks in advance.

The Luba Lounge is a great bar.  Inside is very "loungey"...with couches, etc.  Sometimes there's a DJ inside, sometimes there's a band.  But both times I went, the music was excellent.  Outside they have two or three levels of patios, so you can enjoy the great Montreal summer weather.  And the bartenders are friendly.  I don't want to get your expectations too high, but it's one of my favorite bars I've ever been to.

And while you're in Montreal, get a smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's (http://www.schwartzsdeli.com/)

Easiest place in the world for something like a bachelor party.  Strip clubs are everywhere.  You can stay on St. Catherine St. downtown and find a million of them.  Actually, they will find you if you are with a bunch of guys.  I don't know what kind of bars you like so I cant begin to give a suggestion, but there are plenty downtown as well, with options.  Foufounes Electriques is very 9:30-ish but has the benefit of having a large outdoors area.  Very cool club.  Great music.  Sometimes they have pretty good bands there.
There is a masive casino in the city.  Just get in cabs and ask for "the casino".  Its in Ile Notre Dame.  Obviously its 24 hours and makes a nice after hours option.
Montreal is very friendly.  Its one of the few cities (east coast) I can say I've been to (quite a few times) and always felt safe.  People are very nice.  Food is awesome.  Only expensive if you want it to be.  One of my favorite towns.

sexotheque is on st catherines... a LOT of the strip clubs have funny names.  i didn't go to any...we just drove down the road laughing at some of the names.  montreal was pretty nice.. i had much more fun the second time i was there than the first, but i still dont' feel like i got to explore the city all that much.  i was last there durign  that big blackout in 2003 which affected ontario, PA, NY, OH, etc.. fortunately we'd just travelled to quebec (from ontario) the day before so it didn't matter at all to us.

The Boatanical Gardens by Olympic Park are a swell place for a romantic walk before a nice dinner date.

Props to poutine. No sober person in the world eats it but it seems to make such perfect sense after a dozen Fin Du Monde or Maudites.

I go to Montreal two to three times per year. This time of year, I would strongly recommend that you start on Rue Crescent because a) it's mostly English speaking b) tons of bars with patios c) close to McGill Univ so younger crowd. My favorite place there are two Irish style pubs called Hurleys and McKibbons. McKibbons has a great backyard patio and I've always found that the "scenery" is worth watching. There are some more dance club kinda places like Thursdays. Weird s**t has happened to me there. I don't want to talk about it.

As you go east from the Crescent St area, you should walk along St Catherines St. As everyone has said, there are tons of establishments featuring graduates of the Montreal School of Interpretive Dance. Stop in at the Peel Pub if you want to fill up your stomach with cheap eats and beers. It's an institution. And I promise you that they no longer recycle the half used draft jugs. Really!

If you want to hang out with more of the locals and French speaking crowd, I would recommend you go towards St Laurent Blvd. On Prince Arthur is a great little bar called Vol de Nuit. I like to head there before going to the local concert halls.

But to me, the ultimate summertime bar in Montreal is a place called Bar St-Sulpice, which is on St Denis. It's in the middle of a very cool party neighbourhood and is possibly one of the largest bars in Montreal. It's got four floors with connecting terraces and a HUGE backyard patio. You can't beat it, especially just after classes are done for the day at nearby UQAM.

By the way - all the places I've mentioned are within a 10 minute walk of each other or a very very short cab ride.

Have fun there this weekend! I'll be going next weekend to see Sarah Harmer on Canada Day and then Feist the next night in Quebec City.

I've always found the French speaking area (St. Denis, etc) to be more charming than the English speaking area (Rue Crescent, etc), but that's just my two cents.
