Anyone else go this past Saturday? It was great. Really great.
Have I mentioned recently that Patrick Foster is my favorite Post reviewer?

The Wrens, Flying Through a Little Turbulence
Monday, October 30, 2006; Page C04
At the Black Cat Saturday night, a boisterous crowd cheered the Wrens on to a hard-fought victory: The quartet overcame a messy sound mix and some loose playing with typical passion, rallying themselves -- and their die-hard followers -- to several inspiring peaks.
And there's always their New Jersey indie-rock mystique, in the long tradition of, say, Haledon's the Feelies, who fell apart in 1991 just around the time the Wrens were beginning their career not too far away in Secaucus.
Except for the shaky opening cover of Okkervil River's "It Ends With a Fall" and a meandering encore, the 90-minute set was constructed as a monument to the Wrens' sparkling third album, 2003's "The Meadowlands." With vocals split between bassist Kevin Whelan and guitarist Charles Bissell, every indie rock muscle was tightened for the clanging, anthemic choruses to such songs as "Happy," "Everyone Choose Sides" and "Built In Girls."
The group let the crowd in on the fun, cramming the stage full of people to play percussion on the yearning "Boys, You Won't" and having two piano-playing fans tickle the ivories on "Hopeless." And if harsh treble and occasional shrieks of feedback sent grimaces through the audience, in the end it allowed both the Wrens and their supporters to relish a little more the shout-along that was "Faster Gun"; it hadn't been easy, but they all got where they needed to be.
