Warehouse double header tonight/ PG Six in Alexandria to
« on: December 15, 2006, 01:08:00 pm »
The Warehouse Next Door is back with a vengeance with two great shows tonight and a very special Jessica Delfino "Merry Shitmas"/Alzo performance on Wednesday. And Kohoutek is playing a last-minute surprise set opening for Drag City's P.G. Six at a house show in Alexandria tomorrow.  Details (and upcoming 2007 events) follow:

 ImprovArts Inc. Presents:

 Tatsuya Nakatani (improvising percussionist)
 Eigenvalues (Text/Sound performance duo)

 Friday, December 15
 Warehouse Next Door
 1021 7th Street NW WDC

 $7, all ages!
doors at 7, show at 7:30 sharp!

Q:  So you really expect me to come and listen to a forty minute drum solo?
A:  Yes. Seriously. And you'll thank me for it afterwards.

Tatsuya Nakatani is a rare find: A percussionist with an extraoridnary ear for color in addition to rhythm; an improviser that performs with clear logic and economy of means. His music is abstract yet viscerally compelling.

Originally from Kobe and Osaka, Japan, internationally renowned percussionist Tatsuya Nakatani has toured extensively throughout the world, having performed in approximately 80 cities and 10 countries. Utilizing drumset, gongs, cymbals, singing bowls, metal objects, sticks and bows, he creates collages of sound, which combine the sense of space and beauty found in traditional Japanese folk music with the extended techniques of New Music, yet with great energy and intensity. Although his music defies category or genre, it can be viewed as a cross-cultural mixture of improvised music, experimental music, jazz, free jazz, and rock.

Using the sound of the spoken voice, instrumental accompaniment and electronic processing, Eigenvalues (Cameron McPhee and Jonathan Matis) compose and perform material that blurs the boundaries between music and literary art. Weaving together original and found text with composed and improvised music, Cameron and Jonathan's work is unique, artistically compelling and socially relevant.

Please note: this is an early show, performance begins at 7:30pm.

 Garland of Hours

Amy Domingues is a freelance cellist and composer living in Arlington VA. She maintains a teaching studio and works on various recording projects including film scores. In 2003 her first foray into soundtrack music appeared in the film The Weather Underground, nominated for a Best Documentary Academy Award. She is also a member of the neo-classical chamber group Threnody Ensemble and plays piano, cello, and sings in her own band Garland of Hours. Ms. Domingues has performed in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan, in addition to the United States. She appears as a recording artist on over forty albums to date ranging from classical, electronica, indie-pop, and alt-country styles.

Garland of Hours' self-titled CD isn't a Dischord release, but all the trio's members have played with Fugazi, Dischord's flagship act, and one of them, multi-instrumentalist Brendan Canty, is a founding member of that band. The chamber-rock group's central figure is cellist Amy Domingues, who also plays keyboards and sometimes sings. Two of these seven pieces, which range from the album's 12-minute jazz-classical-minimalist centerpiece "Esperance/Annamite" to the traditional ballad "Katie Cruel," are Domingues solo showcases. The threesome's melding of genres isn't especially bold, but it is skillful and consistently melodious. Of Washington's many experimental post-post-punk combos, Garland of Hours is the only one that owes more to Erik Satie than to Black Sabbath. (Mark Jenkins, Washington Post)

 Fern Knight
 http://www.fernknight.com

FERN KNIGHT from Philadelphia, PA is an ensemble with an ever-changing lineup, fronted by guitarist/cellist and singer Margaret Wienk, who creates delicate, organic acoustic songs orchestrated by layers of accordion/harmonium/electronics drones, pysch-tinged strings, canonic vocals, harp, bells, percussion, and singing saw. The resulting sound is a mixture of experimental acid-folk and baroque-pop, with influences ranging from Marc Bolan to Vashti Bunyan to Ennio Morricone. The music of Fern Knight is a tasteful wedding of medieval/minimalist sensibilities a la Arvo Part with mystical Murakami-esque lyricisms, and, if you choose to follow, will lead you on a faerie-folk romp through otherworldly dark woodlands.

Wienk has been known to lend her acid-cello and upright bass playing skills and voice to other neo-psych contemporaries Greg Weeks, Espers, In Gowan Ring, and Alec K. Redfearn and the Eyesores. Her second full-length Music for Witches and Alchemists was recorded at Hexham Head July 2005 with Greg Weeks at the helm, due for release in 2006. The latest CD EP Blithewold contains covers by Nico and Donovan, as well as an original and some interpretations of songs from soundtracks, such as Morriconeâ??s theme from Dario Argentoâ??s 1969 The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Influenced mostly by the written word in its various forms and dedications (i.e., men and their women, women and their men, natural events, tendencies, perversions, violence, endings, beginnings), my current solo work is based on simple guitar/vocal arrangements that others have and will contribute too through means of improvisation and composition. I have many projects with Preston Swirnoff which include Monosov/Swirnoff, The Shining Path, Habitat Sound System, Hedonic Islands, etc, in which we participate in various ways and have/share various levels of composerly influence. HI also contains other notable members: Scott Allison and Michael Carr (Youth:Kill, Aka Walter Gross). I, along with the founding members Josh Blatchley and Kristin Sherer, perform various functions in the communal group Mountain Home which just finished recording a beautiful record (coming soon). Though, I am still involved in composing works for electronics, 3d space, and etc, because of a concious decision to concentrate my solo efforts on merging poems with song/music, as well as spend time to translate Russian bard music into English, my performances will mostly be concentrated on just that. I will post some reviews of some of these projects in blogs to give some idea as to what I do (or perhaps/most likely to confuse things further). Lastly, please support Frogpeak Collective...it is one of the only true collectives dedicated to helping artists/composers. Members include Philip Corner, Larry Polansky, Jody Diamond, Anthony Braxton, and many more people that have changed the course of music history. Please go to their website! I have special objects and releases only available there, please support them/us! Helpful links:

JESSICA DELFINO IS SORRY TO DISTURB DC!

Just wrapping up her month long residency at alternative performance hot spot Rififi in NYC, Jessica Delfino will tour segments of her show, "Jessica Delfino Is Sorry To Disturb You" in four US cities, including DC. Best known for her provocative (and funny) dirty ditties and for making a video that was so awesome that youtube kicked it off the internet, Jessica Delfino will share music, videos (banned from the internet!), jokes and Christmas-themed debauchery in a seasonal gift of love. She hopes to delight, but she fears it will probably (mostly) disturb.

As part of her "Merry Shitmas" tour.
