Why are vegans so cruel ?

This group is the hardest to shut up, but I have come up with a few sentences, that when said at the right time, will get you a return of 1. dead silence and 2. a look of total confusion as they try to think of further justification for their narrow mindset:  
 
 Tell them that if people didn't eat cows, pigs and chickens, that they would have become extinct by now.  They might argue they would rather never exist than exist just to be eaten by humans.  Ask them how they know cows and pigs would feel the same way.  Tell them that because they are vegan that some cows and pigs and chickens don't ever get to exist, and how sad that is.
 
 Last time I was in the company of a vegan-- less than a week ago-- I asked her if she was concerned that the ice water she was drinking might have been "run through the horse a few times". She replied that, while she may be a vegan, she was no extremist.
 
 Extremism in the pursuit of vegetarianism is no virtue; a moderate in the pursuit of vegetarianism is no vegan.

I'm no vegan (or veggie) but that doesn't make a lot of sense. Why would a vegan want animals to exist to live in the slaughterhouses?

Yeah the science behind that seems a bit off.  What are you basing that on?  People generally don't eat cats and dogs either and they're still plentiful in the world.

That's partially true, although I'm sure there's a pack of stray dogs somewhere in the world that disagrees with you.
 
 But notwithstanding that, I guess I was confused by what you said.  Because it sounded to me like you said if no one ever ate these animals they'd cease to exist, and that doesn't make sense.  If no one ever ate them, they wouldn't have become domesticated in the first place, would they?  And even if everyone stopped eating them now, you're implying that survival instincts would never kick in for any of these animals, and unless you've conducted experiments with domesticating animals over hundreds/thousands of years and then releasing them back into the wild, you're not really in a position to make that argument.
