bloc party was on the OC last night
« on: April 22, 2005, 11:20:00 am »
i joked around about bloc party being on the OC, but i really didn't expect it. i almost fell out of my seat. nonetheless, they weren't mentioned at the end as a "featured band."

so is bloc party's popularity the result of a brilliant publicist? or are they an indie boy band. before you get your panties in a bunch, i like them. i like them a lot and think they played a great show at the black cat. just wondering if any else thinks they exponential growth in popularity is a bit strange.

It's brave of you to admit on this board that you watch the OC   :D  Nonetheless, I admit I have willingly watched it a couple times.  One episode had the Thrills playing at some bar about the size of Iota. Funny thing is it looked like there were about 40 people there and the characters were having conversations at almost whisper levels.  Sort of reminds me of the day Flaming Lips played at the Peach Pit.  Now that was a great show..........

This wasn't the first time Bloc Party was featured on the oh-so hip OC. "Banquet" was on the soundtrack a couple episodes prior. Several decent bands have been featured on the show. I thinks its a result of the relatively young creator of the show who is a fan of "indie" rock.

And I think Bloc Party's growth in popularity isn't that strange. Just look at what happened to Franz Ferdinand and Interpol before them. Its just the music industry hype machine.  Get on a few magazine covers, play Letterman, get your song a tv show (which is like having a music video which was a promotional tool until MTV stopped showing videos--MTV2 doesn't count cuz that station shows drivel most of time also)...pretty soon you'll hear "Banquet" in a Mitsubishi commerical. I don't blame them. These bands probably don't make squat from record sells. Thats why they tour constantly and sell their songs for commercials. Bloc Party is just riding that wave of hype. They'll all plateau eventually.

In conclusion, I think "Silent Alarm" is one of the best albums of the year. Their live show was spot on as well.

The Iota-sized bar is called The Bait Shop.  And Death Cab played there last night.

I love the O.C.  And this is why -- while Death Cab was playing to a crowd of maybe 50, with people all able to talk to each other in normal tones, Summer says [not verbatim, I'm not that crazy], "I can't believe Seth is missing this, his favorite band at the Bait Shop, a place where there are always plenty of tickets and the volume is low enough for talking."  Completely meta-soap opera stuff.  Fantastic.

PS, along similar lines but not about Bloc Party or the O.C., the new show "Grey's Anatomy" has featured Tegan and Sara in THREE episodes.  Fabulous.

and before the O.C. (or maybe the same time) Smallville was playing great music. Hell they use Remy Zero for the show's opening credits. (yes, Im addicted to the show). Although band appearances have occurred very rarely. Of course, the creators of freaks and geeks and undeclared managed to play quite a bit of the dandy warhols.   :D   too bad those shows vanished.

grey's anatomy? never heard of it... but its cool that they play tegan and sara. yeah, i guess a lot of this has to do with young writers and what they're into. now that i think about it, there are a lot of instances...
frank black did a song for the powerpuff girls
and NPR is playing postal service, air, even tortoise

Has to be the Bait Shop.  They get better acts than the Peach Pit (the Killers and The Thrills played there in the past few months) and Alex works there.
