TV on the Radio - thoughts?

Thought it was great, but didn't blow me away. Bad sound, too.

I was totally and utterly blown away.  I saw them open for the Pixies at DAR two years ago, but the club was by far a better environment.  The setlist was great, the songs were incredibly expanded and reimagined live, and their voices are mindblowingly awesome.  The usually sedate 9:30 indie crowd was even way, way into them--hard not to be considering how much energy they brought.  I think I did something terrible to my knee bouncing like a madman during "Satellite," but it was worth it.  Everything was great, but "Poppy" might have been the surprising highlight.  Decent song on record, but the way they carried it off last night made it warmer, fuller, and extremely impressive.

I thought the sound was really well balanced, actually.  Where were you that it seemed off?  I was down in the front just left of center, maybe 20-30 feet back from the stage.

I was close to the food booth  :)  From where I was, the drums were louder than the guitars. But agreed it was a great show...wish the 930 club would stop doing late shows on weekdays and Sunday nights though...it's very consumer-unfriendly esp. to those of us that go to work early...

My thought: I don't care much for them.

Yeah you get full assault of the subs (6 now per side) with only the two lower high packs kicking it for you.  They have done some good things to improve the sound in the middle (the infills) but it is hard to get an even sound around the entire room.  Still there is quite a large sweet spot.

I was impressed that the sound wasn't ear bleeding loud which most wall of sound bands seem to feel the need to inflict on the audience.  And even though they tend to get a bit jammy on some numbers I only checked my watch a couple times which meant they were keeping my attention.

Honestly, not the best performance of TV on the Radio I've seen. I don't think their 2004 show at the Supreme Imperial in Baltimore can be beat. I'd probably even rate their Black Cat backstage performance in early 2004 higher. Some of that might be because the new "Return to Cookie Mountain" material is not as good as the "Young Liars" era stuff. Also, as a band, I actually think they're not as tight as they were in 2004.

I agree that the sound wasn't perfect; I was about ten feet from the stage. I thought the vocals sounded rather clipped at times. Still, an excellent show, if not a spectacular one.

I thought the perfomance was fantastic...super high energy from the start...after a few songs in, i thought TVotR couldn't possibly keep up that breakneck pace, especially after the opener "The Wrong Way" (loved what they did with it!) and "Wolf Like Me" about five songs in, but they came damn close...only lagging here and there. Totally dig their new stuff...the performance of the Celebration was also quite good both as opener and as TVotR's accompaniment.

Very pleased.  Don't know that it will make my year-end top-ten list, but it was solid.

I might have gone to the show had I not found out that Grizzly Bear would no longer be opening.  Or if I'd been able to find a Jenny Lewis ticket.  Sounds like it was pretty good, though.

I got one. I was torn over whether to buy directly from you or buy them at the shows (yes, I'm going to both TVOTR shows), but I finally decided to purchase mine at the show for two reasons: (a) no shipping charges, (b) I won't have to unroll them and flatten them out before hanging them.

For what it's worth, they completely sold out relatively at the show. I overheard several people lamenting this as we were walking to the door.

I'm not too sure if I liked Celebration...that chick singer sounds like she's choking...
