I kind of like Weird War after seeing them open for the Walkmen.  Of course, that could just be in comparison to their TERRIBLE set...

 i like:
 weird war
 decahedron
 metropolitan
 the caribbean
 the positions
 the aquarium
 
 and a bunch more i can't remember right now

if you inclued baltimore bands i've several local favorites.
 
 one of my dc favs is The Cassettes.
 
 just hear of The Caribbean and think that have a  unique way of promoting thier product.

they are all in other bands, local bands, but still, I imagine it is hard to schedule shows

i'm in agreement with ikarus here. the hidden hand are awesome, and canyon was really onto something (but now that brandon butler's out of the band, it ain't gonna be the same).
 
 carrion kicked ass, but they broke up a couple of months ago.
 
 dead meadow are probably my favorite local band, followed by:
 
 thee snuff project
 (sounds of) kaleidoscope
 fugazi
 wooly mammoth
 the apes
 mikroknytes
 orthrelm
