I have a professor at GMU who does nothing but sing praises for Skype..i've never used it, but he has talked about it at about every class meeting this semester

i have it here at work...used it once (ie not too familiar with it).
 
 i guess the obvious advantage is being able to "talk on the phone" with people outside the u.s. for free.
 
 other than that, i don't see anything special about it that you can't do with a phone or aol instant messenger.

My situation is one where I will be calling out of the country... a lot.  My main concern with skype is sound quality.  Free is nice, but a choppy/grainy conversation isn't.

in that case, DC-mexico city sounded crystal clear to me.

I used to call Hungary (landline) from SF (1.5 MB DSL) and it sounded no better or no worse than if I called from my landline.  But it was much cheaper....
 
 You must get a headset though.  Speakers with a mic will provide an echo on the other end.
