Vegas
« on: September 17, 2006, 09:18:00 am »
I have to go to Vegas between the second and third week in October (the 11th to the 21st are approx dates). Anyone got some good suggestions for me on restaurants, shows (particularly non-concerts), and things to do? I am not going to gamble, and actually find gambling boring.

I do plan on going to the Hoover Dam, and checking out the Pogues at the House of Blues.

i should probably specify that i have work obligations there. ie, not a vacation entirely. i don't think i would go to vegas for a week if i wasn't a big gambler or didn't enjoy the  casino atmosphere. i'll stroll thru them, but dropping $500 on black jack ain't my thing. it gets old after an hour.

back to the pogues-is this a one off date for them or is there an entire tour going on that will bring them back to dc?

The Pogues were already in DC on this tour, back in March or so, although it would be dreamy if they'd come back this way again.

As for Vegas... check out the branch of the Guggenheim in the Venetian. I can't remember what the exhibit is; Impressionists, I think?

Ask the concierge at your hotel where ToDai restaurant is; amazing sushi but I can't for the life of me remember where it was!

You are lucky to be able to see the Pogues while you're out there. Vegas is not a music town at all. No local scene, no bands. I was out there in early July and there wasn't anything!

And even if you are not a gambler, take one or two of the gambling classes at whatever casino you're staying in (or head to the Tropicana, their classes are great). They're free and they let you gamble with fake money so it's a lot of fun.

I'll be in Vegas from the 8th and 11th.  Doing the Medieval Dinner thing-a-ma-jig one night and the seeing the Blue Man Group another.  Other than that, just gonna catch alot of sun and do alot of walking around.

Finally, a topic I know something about. I am going back to LV next week for 4 nights.

If you are into Cirque shows, try Mystere, I liked it better than O and I think it is less expensive.

If you are renting a car, stop off at CVS or other store and buy some bottled water so that you don't have to buy the $4 minibar water.

Its nice to lunch outside at Mon Ami Gabi at Paris.

Its worth a drive out to Red Rock Canyon (1/2 hr or so) to see the rocks.

Dinner at Chinois at the Forum Shops at Caesars is excellent, as was the Steakhouse at Bally's, Fix at Bellagio, and too many others to mention.  Also, Fat Burger and In and Out burger.

Even if you don't gamble, head over the Hard Rock one evening and watch the scene from the bar in the center of their casino.  Some cool memorabilia there as well.

Finally, on your way to or from the Hoover Dam, if you stop off at Lake Mead they have divey little cafes on the water and the water is absolutely teeming with Carp and its like something out of a (very bad) horror movie.

I hope to retire to Vegas some day.....almost got a job there last spring....and I'm going out there 1-10 October.

Anyway, check out pollstar.com to find out who is playing in Vegas while you are there.  House of Blues isn't a bad place to see a show...I saw Me First and the Gimme Gimmes and had a blast.

As far as the Cirque shows go, there are lot of them out there.  Mystere (mentioned above) is good, O is good.  I thought that La Reve is a good compromise between Mystere and O.  Ka is good, but not as good as the previously mentioned ones.  Zumanity is Cirque meets burlesque.  The new one is Love, which is Cirque meets the Beatles and has been getting good reviews.  If you have decided on a Cirque show (or any show for that matter), you should consider getting your tickets now; otherwise you will most likely have to wait in the last minute line for tickets as most shows sell out.

If he is in town, try to see Elton John, as he put on a really fun, greatest hits, show.  If you like Celine (and remember, what goes on in Vegas stays in vegas) you should check out her show.

Make sure you hit the downtown area to see the "Fremont Street Experience" which is a cool laser light show that starts at dusk; it's above the steet with all the classic neon casino signage.

Check out the New York, New York rollercoaster; I've never been on the rides at the Stratosphere, but I heard they were okay as well.

Definitely cruise by Red Rock Canyon, it's close to the strip and a nice drive through.

Hard Rock Hotel is fun to see all the memerobilia; however, you should throw a few quarters at the "Pretty Vacant" slot machine (if it is still there).  There is something about a Sex Pistol themed slot machine that put a smile on my face.

The Hoover Dam tour is not what it used to be.  Now it is a movie, go down the elevator, walk to the balcony overlooking the turbines, and then back up the elevator.  They also restrict what you can bring in with you (like no backpacks, etc.) so you wanna make sure, before you leave your car, what you can and cannot bring on the tour.  Still it is quite an impressive site.

If you are taking a bus tour to the canyon, avoid any tours which include a trip to Laughlin.  It would be a real waste of time.

The Liberace Museum is quite kitschy, and it smells like a funeral home, but it is neat to see...once.

I can personally recommend the buffet at the Bellagio (and don't forget to watch the fountains out front); it's pricey, but has lots of good, well prepared dishes.  I also heard that the buffet at Wynn is good. The Rio Seafood Buffet is no longer what it was and I wouldn't waste my time going there.  You should also consider making reservations for any of the finer restaurants as soon as you think you know you want to eat there.

That's about all I can think of now.  Any ?s you can PM me....

We had a great time at Lucky Cheng's during our last Vegas trip.  Good food (Asian), heavy-handed drinks and a hilarious drag cabaret show.
