...too bad there were only about fifty of us to hear it...it was a pathetic showing for an awesome guitarist.  Without squiffy hair/MTV endorsements and a hipster following, even genius talent is ignored.  Maybe when he wins a Grammy, he'll be "in".

Here's my opinion:  Sonny is an amazing guitarist; he didn't showcase THAT much of his jazz talent, probably because he was aware that the club was known mostly for rock.  I also think there was WAYYY too much bass/drums that distracted from his amazing skills on the guitar.  I think I would have enjoyed a solo performance more.  Compared with Rocco DeLuca - a much younger slide/do bro player who is touring right now with only a drummer - Sonny's style is much more jazz/traditional southern blues/rock.  BTW:  Kosmo, if you ever have a chance to hear DeLuca, don't miss him.  He'll blow you away! As for the snarky Starbucks comment, I don't DO Starbucks for many reasons, so I don't know much about their entries into the music world except for recent bs. about Bob Dylan's "newest" cd...(big joke:  NEW Bob Dylan???!!! What's in that coffee?)I doubt I'd take a trip into their store for ANYONE's cd...but hey, that's MY point-of-view only.

Is it this "grammy" thang that's got a few tied about the axle?  What "measure" is the right one? The MTV video/music awards? FUSE? XM rankings? Album sales?  I just used the grammy's as one known entity that might define a musician's success as viewed by other musicians/producers. EVERY one of my musician/songwriter friends would be VERY happy with even a grammy nomination.  Why don't fans think it counts for squat?  Whatever you want to use as a gauge, you use...ditto for me, right?

Maybe getting a Grammy nomination in the smaller catagories is a nod from one "peers", but the larger catagories are a joke. i.e. Fountains of Wayne getting nominated for best new artist after having released two major label records already.  Record companies instruct thier employees who can vote to support only that labels nominees, so it's based on politics not artistic merit.

The Starbucks snark was because they seem to where artist of Sonny's ilk get much of their sales these days. So until it's being sold along side the Ray Charles, Lucinda Williams, etc CDs he'll be working  the record to the smaller yet more well informed audience. As evidenced by the slower selling shows like Gang of Four, Dino Jr.  people don't want to dig beyond what they hear on the radio, tv or whats considered "hip" and "trendy".  Highly inflential means nothing to most...

Alanis Morrissette "exclusive" at Starbuck's made me wanna toss my latte.

Besides, I thought artist recognition is provided by the "OC". ;)

Debate aside, the point is, Sonny Landreth is pretty darn talented. The end. If you didn't see him this past Friday he's appearing at Rams Head (Tavern) in a couple of months.
