Kinda like Kim Wilde's "Kids In American"
New York to East California. If you exclude the western half of CA, 95% of the state's population is counted out.
HOWEVER, musically, the line needed a syllable before California, and "east" sounded better than "west". Extending "to" to "to-oo" would have sounded clumsy.
I'm okay with most weird lyrics when they work better musically than proper grammar would.
