best place to sell CDs to? (used CD stores)
« on: September 01, 2008, 04:06:00 pm »
I know this came up a while ago, but I can't remember what the consensus was.

What's the best place (as far as getting the highest $ or trade-in value) to which to sell one's CDs?

(Ahhh, would that this board had a search function!)

EDIT: Whoops; replied by mistake when I meant to edit the original post.

i sold a couple hundred on amazon.com's "marketplace" and was happy with the prices i got ... it may take you an afternoon to put them all online, but if you price them aggressively they sell themselves

i've heard good things about half.com as well

i think smackie just unloaded a bunch of CDs, he might have more insight

Hmm... ideally I'm looking for a brick-and-mortar place I can just take them to.

I know people are supposed to be able to get great prices for their stuff on eBay, etc., but (for me) I don't think it's worth the hassle of having to package the items, take them to the post office, etc., etc.

Offering them on here, or any other sort of private sale, is going to get you more money then putting them on half or amazon.

i think someone said somewhere that they make great ninja throwing disks of death.  like out of hellraiser III, i think it was.  but as was implied before, the internet replaces everything, especially brick-n-mortar, so i would just do it that way.  it becomes fun after the first few days, and you'll never beat the price.  brick-n-mortar = rippa-you-offa.

there is some up-front effort (ordering a bunch of #1 padded envelopes, stamps, return address labels online), but you'd be surprised at how easy it is once you get that out of the way

it generally doesn't save money to send a CD media mail or anything other than normal 1st class mail, so you just stamp them up and set them out every day for your mailman ... amazon sends you the buyer's name/address, you just print it out and tape it to the front of the package ... at one point i was sending upwards of 4 packages a day and it was really really simple

you'll get killed on price at a brick-and-mortar store compared to selling online, and if you're selling a lot of CDs it will really add up

depending on what you're selling, you'll be amazed at how much $ you can get for your discs ... if you're trying to dump some hootie and NKOTB albums, you're SOL, but it's amazing to see how strong the used cd "market" is for classic alternative/indie albums ... i was regularly getting $7-9 a CD for bands like my bloody valentine, jesus & mary chain, etc

Depends which Hootie album....back in '93 they self-produced an album called "Kootchypop," with an early version of "Only Wanna Be With You."  My GF got $51 for it on Ebay!

I second (third?) Hoya's Amazon suggestion.  Posting the CDs takes all of 5 seconds, and I've gotten MUCH better prices than I ever would've on eBay.  The only pain is the actual shipping, but it's still worth it.  So far, I've probably cleared 500 bucks or so.

you may want to try soundgarden in baltimore? i've never actually sold them albums, but they ALWAYS have a good selection of used albums, which leads me to believe they have a decent buy/trade program.

Don't get me wrong, I love CD Cellar and support them, but I'm curious of everyone's opinion about their buy back prices - competitive?

I'm the same way. My advice is to filter out the few that are valuable and only sell those online. Unload all the rest on a store and be done with them.
