from today's washington post:
Alright! Lily Allen Comes to 9:30 Club
Don't you hate it when a non-American performer or band comes to the country for a few shows and skips the nation's capital? It seems wrong, and yet it seems like it happens quite often. Not this time, though. Delightfully foul-mouthed British pop star and Internet sensation Lily Allen will be hitting the states for a handful of shows next month, and one of those will be at the 9:30 club on Friday, Feb. 16. Tickets go on sale a week from today at the very reasonable price of $15.
If you haven't heard of Allen at this point, then you clearly don't spend much time reading about music online, because it seemed like she singlehandedly kept the MP3 blogging community busy and fawning for much of last year. Her debut album, "Alright, Still," which features catchy hits like the reggae-tinged "Smile" and the definitive summer jam of 2006, "LDN," hasn't officially been released in the States (that will happen on Jan. 30), but as we saw with Art Brut's album last year, we're hard pressed to find fans who haven't tracked it down in some form or another. It's well worth the effort, too, as much for its bouncy melodies as Allen's often hilarious putdowns of her ex-boyfriend. (That relationship serves as the inspiration for much of the album.) Allen's still a rookie when it comes to playing live, and reports from her first stateside shows a few months ago were mixed, but we're willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. Plus, she's a total babe.
