My faith in the White Stripes has been fully restored... After the lackluster show at GWU and Elephant being real hit or miss and not so good things said about the yet unheard new one, all it took was a blistering 90 minute set to win me back.  Dunno what was different, possibly Jack wasn't trying as hard this time around and Meg is rockin' hard then ever.  It's great watching Jack seeming decided the setlist on the fly.  While the duo setup still works for most of the songs, it would be nice to have a couple extra players on the songs where Jack switches to keyboards to fill out the sound.  Plus it would be great to hear the material in a new light with a extra guitar player, etc live.  Especially, the songs from "White Blood Cells" which got the warmest crowd response.

Fashion report, Meg look extra hot in her Pink Leather suit and Jack was wearing a beige loincloth...

The Shins were good but just seemed a bit out of place, I think the pacing was little off to  a broken guitar string early in the set.

The Merriweather pit is the second best place in DC to watch a rock show from...

agreed about the stripes set....it was rocking, hell, they managed to bring live to a tegan and sara song

 shins were fun.....

m.ward was interesting....two old people in front of me were debating on its merits, one said it was the worst crap he ever heard, the other was calling it the second coming of the Paul Butterfield Blues band.....eh, I thought it was good, but not earthshaking or anything

all in all though, great show, and just what I need this week, lol

I agree that the show was head and shoulders above the GWU show.  Plenty of old stuff and even the new stuff (which I'm not crazy about) sounded great.  That Jack White fellow sure can play the guitar.

Missed the first part of the Shins because [understatement]sometimes traffic really sucks in this area.[/understatement] What I saw was very good.

But yeah, the White Stripes rocked.  I even thought I spied nkotbaba banging his head and throwing up the devil horns.

it would appear that after scanning some of the setlists from this tour, jack tends to do things off the cuff... does this mean i'll have to follow them around too

Did anyone see M. Ward? I wondered if that was a very good fit, since he's much more on the mellow, intimate end of things. But End of Amnesia and Transistor Radio are great records.

Yeah, terrific show. Loved being in the pit. I was able to forget where I was. Jack's energy on stage always gets me. And their sound becomes so primal when he screeches, the guitar squawks, and Meg pounds that heartbeat of a thump. I had forgotten how the two of them exchange visual cues throughout every song. It's really an evolving experience as Jack alters the songs. I loved the piano and other instruments. The  songs on the Steinway surprisingly rocked.

As for The Shins, I thought it was one of the best performances I've seen from them. They all seemed to be having a good time, and James' voice was in very good form. They played all of my favorites and then some. And that keyboard player (what's his name?) cracks me up! He made some hilarious comments about James' broken string.

 M. Ward - I wasn't in front for most of his set. But I liked it. I like his voice a lot. The first opening band just has a hard time projecting because the seats are half empty and the intimacy isn't there.

The GWU show for the Elephant tour alright/good this show was exceptional.  I too agree that the General Admission at Merriweather are great.  I really like the Shins, but their performance seemed more fit for a small club.  Jack handled Merriweather stage like an arena rocker meanwhile balancing his presence with Meg which allowed her to shine.  Awesome show!  Does anyone know what Jack White did when he got down in front of the stage after the show?  Has anyone found the show on the NPR website?

Best concert peformance of the year! Seriously, I was riveted from the minute Jack and Meg took the stage until they left after the encore.

I really wish I had been in the pit....

The NPR streams can be found here:

    http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4834385

If anyone converts those streams to MP3 format for listening on iPods or whatever, please send me a PM.

I really like the Shins, but they sounded just like their albums except a little faster and louder. I'd still like to hear them in a more intimate venue. (Yeah, I missed them when they played the Black Cat. I'm lame.)

Kosmo, thank you for posting the set list!
