craig and that list

i finally checked out that craigslist site, and thought it was an intersting place, but i have a question about the selling of stuff on there, like tickets.  have people here bought tickets and other stuff on there before?  how reliable are the place/people/products?  the prices on there are seemingly untouchable compared to what things can sometimes go for on ebay, and i was curious to people's past experiences.  i guess if you pay for items using paypal, you can have that paypal protection, in case something is fake or f-ed up, but ebay offers a step further, where you can go after the person criminally if they try to pull a fast one.

I found my current apartment through Craig's list. I've had no problems selling or buying items on there. *knocks on wood* It's really easy now to post photos on there since they allow you to upload on their site. (Before, the person had to host them elsewhere.) That helps in allowing the buyer to see what's available, the condition, etc.
 
 I've never used PayPal to purchase things on CL, though. It's easier to pay in cash. Besides, PayPal takes a cut of the $$.

in my experiences, paypal doesn't take a cut unless you are paying or receiving funds via credit card...

They also take out a service fee if you decide to transfer funds to your bank account and it's under their "threshold amount."

I've never encountered a fee for tranferring money to my checking account.  I've had people pay me via Paypal for some stuff I sold out my car, and then transferred what they paid me (that was sitting in my Paypal account) over to my checking account that Paypal has.  Have transferred almost $600 in the past two months to my bank without penalty.

no, paypal takes a percentage out of each transfer.  while i may have sent $20, the person i'm sending it to gets like $19.50, or something like that.  however, no transaction fee is incurred if it's a paypal balance transfer.

I use CL all the time for buying & selling items, etc. Never had a problem on the buying side, pay in cash, get tickets in person or find a way to exchange. Ive been screwed a few times selling things. Find people who say they will buy tickets, agree to meeting up, and they never show. Now that gets irritating.
 
 ive also met very cool people off of CL. in the activity partners section.

Hate to be a stickler, but back to this Paypal thing.  I just had two people send me $15 each via Paypal for old parts off of my car.  And I have $30 total sitting in my Paypal account.  And when I go to do a transfer to my checking account via Paypal, it will be for $30.  Paypal hasn't taken anything.  I just sold old rims for $445.  Guy paid me through Paypal.  I then took that money and transferred it to my checking account.  After 3 days the money was there in my checking account, in full, no penalty.  Albeit none of this was with a credit card, but Paypal took nothing.

ditto here...just transferred $38 free and clear to my checking account. you don't pay anything as long as you choose the "free" transfer option which takes 3-4 days to post to your account.

well, one time i sold some concert tickets to a guy in Jersey. 3 weeks later he says he never got them.  I have Fedex delivery confirmation, but nonetheless Paypal refunds his $200 and tells me there's nothing i can do about it.
 
   needless to say, Paypal is yet another boycott i have going on.

welcome to the 21st century ... in regards to the reliability of the sellers on the site, newspapers in major metro areas around the country are scrambling to save their classified sections because of CL's success (see all those washpost classified ads on the metro?), it's the real deal and they're completely changing the landscape of "classifieds"
