Beware of Itunes!
« on: October 07, 2006, 08:28:00 pm »
I noticed recently that a number of songs I used to have are gone, and this appears to coincide with the upgrade to Itunes v. 7.   They're not just gone from Itunes, they're gone from the hard drive altogether.

Fortunately, I just lost a few songs... most of which appear to be songs I downloaded from Napster back in the day.  Maybe this is another covert Apple strike against piracy.

 Not so lucky this person:

All the more reason to have files backed up on an external hard drive on a regular basis.

I can't really complain about iTunes at the moment.

It could have searched for music on the comp and just moved it to the iTunes directory like its defaulted to do and that person could be a total dumbass.

Yeah, but if you do a Google search for Itunes deleting music files, you'll find a lot of unhappy people out there.

And, I may be a dumbass, but I know all about files and whatnot, and I'm telling you, Itunes killed some of my music.   I agree about the importance of backing up -- luckily I had all of this stuff on another comp -- but you should be able to trust good software not to fuck you over.

This is why I use emusic.com instead of iTunes. The selection may not be as diverse but you get a mp3 that is not tracked or coded in anyway. This is always nice when I go to see a friend or take a new job and I do not have to "authorize" the computer. The prices are better since you download via a subscription service but if you do not use up all your donwloads you lose them, as I did last month.

But yeah, back up independently and do it often; be it music or files for work.

This is why I use my personal CD collection instead of iTunes. The selection may not be as diverse but you get a CD . This is always nice when I go to see a friend and I do not have to "use" the restroom.
