Early/Late Shows
« on: October 24, 2006, 10:30:00 am »
I know that the 9:30 has often done early and late shows on the same night, but lately it seems like more and more of these are happening. I find them kind of annoying...for example on Sunday, November 26th, Reel Big Fish are doing the early show (doors at 4:30) and Peaches is doing the later show (doors at 10pm). Those late shows on Sunday are a killer (realistically she'll be on at 11:30, which of course means no Metro home).

Now I know the 9:30 has to do what it can to make money, but don't some of these early/late shows seem like a bit of a stretch timewise? I also wonder if artists like Peaches would be upset that maybe fewer people will be able to go see her show. 4 of my friends wanted to go, but they all have jobs that require them to be at work at 8am or earlier...so an 11:30 showtime means now none of them can go. I know...nobody said living like a rockstar was easy, but I really wish the 9:30 would consider limiting the early/late shows to weekends.

on the one hand, i agree.  sunday late shows are tough.

on the other, look at the alternative: the band doesn't play DC at all and we have no option of seeing them (instead of a less-than-ideal one).  the 930 is fairly unique in its niche in terms of size and downtown location.  a lot of acts won't play anywhere smaller (sometimes the cost of the tour dictates this).  often they are on a tight schedule so they need to play on a certain night.

as much as sunday late shows suck, i'd rather have that option than none at all.  i'll still bitch about them, though   :)

speaking of late shows: anyone planning on catching the rapture with the presets on thursday?  i'll take a disco nap beforehand, then electro the night away...

There was an article in the Post when Seth started doing the double (and once a triple/quad show day!) shows about how he would prefer to have two shows at the club than have someone play another local venue and get used to playing there.

I can say that you think it is painful to go to one or both of the shows, imagine working both.

I've already imagined that and, believe me, the employees do have my sympathies, especially during busier weeks.

Actually, I have much bigger problems with early shows as I often can't make it to most of those. It's just never worth the bother. Way too much rushing around, trying to get out of work on time without the bosses getting shitty, skipping any kind of dinner or even a snack, rush hour traffic in 2 different cities, and other crap to put up with just to (hopefully) slide in at the last minute to catch a show. Saturdays and Sundays may be the exceptions and on a Sunday, I probably would appreciate an early show.

I would appreciate every show starting at 7:30 and ending at 9:30, preferably with no opening act, since they are a waste of time 95% of the time. That way, I can be in bed at my 10 pm bedtime. I don't think this is too much to ask. Mr. Clubowner, could you please make note of this, and do my bidding? Thanks!

I find it very funny how people complain about the showtimes and how late they are. Its a good thing youre not in NYC, because I'm pretty sure no one gives a damn of what time the show begins. Ive been lucky on some nights if im in before 2AM, but when its a band I want to see I pay the price. But I will say, it is nice that the subway runs 24/7. And the taxis arent too ridiculous.

And most of us have jobs we have to get to at early hours as well. Because I'm sure for a lot of the bands (which many do already) the alternative is you dont play DC. And we all know how much complaints there are of how a lot of bands dont stop there. I used to complain enough about it myself. Now im in the other circle, where everyone plays NYC and I wonder how I'm going to find time to sleep. Pick your battles wisely.

Ash just played a midnight show at a club on a weeknight. But I surely wouldnt have missed that for any f'ing job. And sleep is overrated. Youll get plenty when youre dead    :D

I will say the Kooks finishing at 10:30 last night was a nice change. But Id have stayed around all night if they had enough material.

Well, this isn't NYC...I don't see what that has to do with anything. I'm glad shows come to DC and especially the 9:30, don't get me wrong. I just really appreciate it when the shows happen at the usual time during the week...main band on at 10, home by midnight. Sleep isn't overrated if you have the kind of job where you need to be alert and can't screw around.
