camera obscura/georgie james roll call
« on: July 09, 2006, 07:25:00 pm »
anyone going? anyone know set times? i was thinking 9 for opener and 10 for headliner, but that seems kinda early for the black cat.

Black Cat shows sometimes end a little earlier on Sundays, I think, so it's possible. Certainly 9 for the opener would be standard for 8:30 doors. Maybe 10:15 or 10:30 at the latest then for Camera Obscura.

 Are Georgie James worth catching?

 Anyway, I'll be there....

i'm guessing 915/1030. it'll barely be dark by 9, seems wrong for the black cat to start a show then.

and yeah, GJ is certainly worth catching. in a couple years they could very well be the band people think of when they think "d.c.," if things go their way.

hmmn, sorry about that, apparently that staffer was wrong that i spoke with as the set times were actually 9.30 and 10.45.

there is a guy i see there a lot, perhaps a boardie? i see him enough that at this point, i feel like i should walk up to him and introduce myself and ask if he's a boardie, but if he's not, well then, i'd be seriously embarassed. tall, thin, shaved head, gray or light green shirt (couldn't tell in the light), jeans, smoker, and had motorbike helmet. is that one of you?

 j. freedom du lac was there. anyone else see him? he had a sidekick that was taking down notes for the show. maybe a  washington post intern as his hands had big  black x's on them. so he's eitehr underage or forgot his license.

did someone puke at the bar on the left? they had cones up and there was a slight pukey/sickening sweet smell.

georgie james played for 45 minutes. liked mostly everything except for one song where it was only here on vocals, rather than all 3. the boy said she reminded him of chrissy hynde.

camera obscura was on for over an hour. was a bit more ambivalent about them, but would definitely give them another whirl. defintely a throwback to mazzy star and the sundays.

i'd say the place was 3/4 full. this is the first i've heard either of them so can't really comment further. just thought the show looked interesting so i picked up tickets last week. good pairing. good show for a sunday night as well.

so yes, you should have gone hoya!  :D

for some reason i decided to drink heavily at this show, much more so than usual. not sure why. so take most of this with that proverbial grain o' salt. georgie james was good, i've seen 'em better. that room wasn't doing them any favors. lately i've been getting frustrated w/people complaining about the sound at the black cat, i mean, it's a rock show, deal with it, jesus christ. but maybe they have a point. it didn't ruin the performance, but it sounded a bit thin. and the random blasts of feedback during camera obscura's set weren't too enjoyable, and you could see tracyanne was miffed early on.

but still, CO was really good. i love that band a alot and was drunk, so, again, y'know. they did a lot of slow songs early in the set, so it didn't really get going for a bit, and even the more upbeat ones didn't have the same dynamics as on the album. but they just write really great pop songs, it's hard not to enjoy it. played almost the entire new album and a few others like "80s fan," and "teenager." "suspended from class" was the final encore. again, that room might not be the best to pick up the nuances in their songs, but i had a blast.

the hott rumor in the club was that tony hawk was there. hey, i just report what i hear...

so that girl stopped and asked you as well if tony hawk was there? she was going around with a few of her friends, who didn't believe her that tony hawk was there to find someone who could officially confirm/deny that rumor.

for someone that is really drunk right now, you type amazingly well!  :D
