will oldham in Guatemalan Handshake
« on: April 23, 2007, 02:06:00 pm »
The Guatemalan Handshake (which I did the production design on) will be playing at the AFI Silver from April 27 - May 3 at 9pm every night. Will Oldham puts carrots in his nose in it. Cory Mcabee from the Billy Nayer Show also stars. Check it out.

I just don't get the facination with Will Oldham. He's a bit repulsive, no? And his sleep inducing music?

It translates into a good character, though...

I suppose so. Is his character anything like the one in Old Joy? I didn't see that, but from what I read/previews I saw his character seemed kind of like a cliched pot smoking 40 year old pseudo-intellectual loser.

I like his music.  But, I do not understand the sexual attraction most women seem to have towards him.  I saw him once at the Ottobar surrounded by supermodels, and all the girls there were freaking out...it was odd.

There were supermodels at the Ottobar???

I once saw him at Fletchers in Baltimore, and two guys and a gal started making out in the middle of the floor, right in front of the stage.  Shirts started flying toward the stage, and eventually security escorted the threesome out.  I can't say for sure if it was the Oldham or the drugs that got them all touchy-feely, but it was one of the most bizarre things I've ever seen at a show.

That's the last time I let Sonick share his weed with us at a show.   :p

Nice try, but there's no way what I saw was weed-induced.  MDMA-laced weed, maybe.  I'll have to keep believing it was that raw Oldham sexuality that whipped 'em into a frenzy.  There's a sentence I didn't expect to write when I got to work today.

Funny you should mention this movie - I came across it by chance via Google. The title intrigued me, alas, it's at the film festival...I might head out..I dig the little car.

You got me! I've never seen him live so only have photos to go by but they sure don't do it for me. Maybe it's one of those hormonal scent things that kicks in once you get a good whiff of him. Or maybe it's just that Rock star thing that he knows how to work to his advantage. I really couldn't tell you.

I like some of his music but do have to be in the right mood for it. Not that I would be adverse to it during intimate moments, it certainly doesn't do anything to stimulate my libido so I suspect it's not resonating those heart and sex strings. Then again, maybe I'm like one of those people who can't smell skunk.

The friday and saturday screenings will have  a live performance by BOB the band from Italy as well as a Q&A with the cast & crew of the film moderated by Jeff Krulik (heavy metal parking lot).

Screenings end May 2nd (not 3rd as originally mentioned).

The car (commute-a-car) figures prominently in the plot. There was also supposed to be an amphi-car, but it sank.

I just recently viewed Matewan for the first time in about 20 years. The whole time I was watching it I kept thinking: "I recognize that kid, who does he remind me of?"

I had no idea Will Oldham was in it. Guess I should've paid attention to the opening credits. He was very good.
