She did. She was on no label and posted demos on myspace and within 3 months had a 6-time #1 in the UK. That's coming out of nowhere. Obviously, her US ascension is not.

And I have to say the Amy Winehouse debut is much better than the Lily Allen debut.

I haven't heard her music, but something about Amy Winehouse seems so fake and manufactured. All I read about is how much weight she lost and how self-destructive she is and how she's three whiskeys away from drinking herself to death. Two years ago she was a relatively normal-looking pop singer, and now all of a sudden she's copping an Elvira DiFranco look. It feels like she saw all the press that Pete Doherty was getting and thought, I need to re-do my image.
