I'd be surprised if very many people get it right away.  It just doesn't seem worth it to install it on a current system...I'll just wait for it to come on a capable, new system.

Considering how many people I meet through my job who are still running the 95 OS, I don't see a huge surge in purchases.

You would think people would have learned by now to never get the first generation of OS from Microsoft.

I've had it for about 6-8 months.  It's impressive, but as usual, a real RAM hog.  Given it's video capabilities, I don't recommend an upgrade unless you have a fancy video card - I'd wait and buy a machine that has Vista pre-loaded with all the right hardware.

ALL software has bugs and glitches, including software written for any platform.

Had MS not wasted computing power on stupid fluff and glitz like the Aero interface that makes your desktop look like glass panes floating on top of each other then we could have used he full potential of our computers on real work.  Its amazing how many people equate fluzz, glitz, and gee whiz crap with 'new and improved'.  Vista continues the long trend of MS attempting to have a combined look and feel of two horrid systems, those being Mac OS and AOHell...

I just don't understand why people get excited about new operating systems.   The only reason to upgrade, on either a Mac or Windoze, is 1) security considerations force you to, or 2) new software that you need won't run without it.   Otherwise you're paying a lot of money for something that won't actually do anything that your computer couldn't do before -- the computer world's version of getting a new car for bigger tailfins.

Dr. Doom, you're talking about 2 different things.  New Operating Systems (exciting) and upgrading (not exciting).

Being excited about new operating systems is standard fare, just like updates to other software.  It's perfectly natural to be excited about being able to do new things with the software, and every new OS has new features (except for WinMe, which never should have been made).

But upgrading to a new OS is completely different.  Generally, your computer was built to hardware specifications of the OS it came loaded with.  I almost never recommend OS upgrades outside of service packs because, generally, you can't take full advantage of new technologies with old hardware.

So the only time you should ever get a new OS is when you need and purchase a new computer.  And since computers are cheaper than cars and have a much shorter shelf life, your productivity will increase with a new computer every 2-3 years, which generally coincides with new OS's.
