Most disappointing show at 9:30...
« on: September 18, 2004, 08:25:00 pm »
This isn't a  best  or a  worst  list, this is a most disappointing list. This list is for bands you had high expectations for, but were let down. Mine: Mike Mills at Tell Us the Truth Tour last year. REM are pretty solid live but apparently solo they suck.

there's no question on this for me.
i've enjoyed every show i've been to at the 930 overall except these two:

 moby: 12/12/97
 sigur ros: 03/19/03

for moby: the openers.. i wish i could say they were forgettable, but i still remember how incredibly bored i was the whole time.  when moby finally came out, he somehow managed to make all his electronic-based songs sound EXACTLY alike.  the stuff from animal rights (the album he was touring in support of) was ok.  the ONLY thing that was even remotely entertaining/good about the show was at the end when he started taking requests for (partial) covers and did at least a dozen of them.  other than that, i felt like i wasted $12 and also had to spend an evening with an ex.

sigur ros:  i've posted about this before in another thread.  i think they're incredibly boring.  i had heard album material before and wasn't impressed, but i'd heard so many people say that they were amazing live.  i've seen bands before that were way better live than they were on the albums, so i thought this might be the case with sigur ros.  i believe i was wrong.  i don't know if i've ever been so incredibly bored at a concert in my life.

garbage with abandoned pools:  abandoned pools were decent, nothing special.  this was my first time seeing garbage after missing them every time they came to dc.  i was disappointed to say the least.  i thought shirley was in great spirits but this was quite possibly the loudest show i've ever been to and i go to a lot of punk/metal shows.  i was just bludgeoned (if that's the right word) by this massive wall of sound.  i think my ears were actually hurting during the show.  the crowd was pathetic.  even for a d.c. crowd, it was lame as hell.  nobody in the front was even moving.  to top that off, the tallest guy in the club of course had to be 3 rows from the front and of course had to be blocking my view the whole time.

I saw taproot at the club before welcome came out, and they put on a good show, and it was well packed.

as for my most dissapointing my 930 show...

 NERD

probably the most dissapointing show ever. They didn't sound good. at one point, the house speakers went out, but I guess the stage moniters were on, so the band kept on playing and me and my friends were looking at each other like "what the hell just happened?" I think the worst part though was that Chad wasn't even there! So it was just one keyboard, which really took away from some of the songs.

however, black eyed peas were the other headliner, and they were awesome

sigur ros were awesome that show, it was mesmerizingly good.

i agree with andyrichter about the garbage show.  it was so painfully loud, it just hurt to be there.  i think that's why the crowd may have been lame.  nobody could have had a good time at those volume levels.  the overwhelming feeling of loudness-induced pain just blocked everything else out.

however, the most disappointing show ever was Badly Drawn Boy.  I ceased being a fan after that one.  I can't even listen to his music, which is nice, without thinking what an ass he is, how insulting he was to the audience at that show.  he's put out a bunch of CDs since that I would have bought, but now will never buy.  i took a friend to that show to introduce him to BDB's music, and needless to say....

Tricky back in 1999 or whatever was abysmal...I was hoping for something different I guess. The Charlatans UK in 2000 was pretty disappointing too. KMFDM in 2002 (I think) was the poorest performance I've seen them do. That's all that I can think of off the top of my head.

As for other disappointing shows, one near the top of the list was the Cocteau Twins in 1994 at Lisner. Just AWFUL!!!

I was at both of the Garbage nights and will say the first night had alittle bit of sound issues since another PA system was brought in for the show. The second night however was fantastic! Excellent set (opening up with #1 Crush was a bonus too!) that was different both nights. Abandoned Pools were also very good too, but I was probably just too busy looking at Leah playing bass the whole time  :)

I've seen Taproot at the club twice now. I'm guessing Flawd you're talking about the 2nd time they came around. The first time it was rather crowded...considering the bill also had Alien Ant Farm and Linkin Park. Either way both shows were great. Especially when Steven makes fun of Fred Durst!

So for my disappointing show which was a big let down would go to my stunt double's band...Filter. Their sound check sounded so good but I guess if you just sit around and get plastered before you go on and then be an ass on stage that'll make for a bad show  :)  Go figure!

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the recent Beastie Boys show.  After all the hype before the show, they turned up 3 hours late and played for about 45 minutes.

Yes, it was due to bad weather.  Yes, they could have cancelled.  Yes, they bought pizza.

Still - it was a very disappointing show.

 Also: Snow Patrol @ 9:30 Club 9/10/04.

i was talking about the non crowded show.  i want to see them at a crowded show.  they didn't have much energy as i would have expected from live downloads....
