Anyone go to the Microphones show in Balt?

Was it a solo acoustic/electric show or was there a full backing band?

The latter would be much more appealing for Wed's DC show.

i'm not a big fan of solo acoustic sets.  that would be a big determining factor whether i go tonight.

have you heard the live album, it is not just solo, but it is acoustic, and is pretty amazing

Live In Japan is pretty great...his voice on that album reminds me a lot of Mark Kozelek from the Red House Painters.

i've seen the microphones twice, and both times it was elvrum solo. of course, i want to see them live with all that crazy shit they do on record, but i guess it's too tough for elvrum to bring it all on the road.

the first time i saw him was in september of 2001, solo with an acoustic and a chintzy casio. it was intimate, but a bit lacking.

the second time i saw him was in may of 2003 (i think), at the black cat backstage with dub narcotic. elvrum was playing an electric guitar. he was fantastic, the performance was intense, and you could hear a pin drop.

i'm hoping tonight will be like the latter show. if you're a microphones fan, you'd be a fool to miss it.

i saw the microphones at luna lounge in new york during cmj in 2000 and i'm pretty sure i remember a full band being there. i could be wrong tho, i could be remembering the full band being for mirah's set and not phil's. i'm pretty sure he was playing bass for her.

the other time i saw him he played a show at WMUC in college park. now that was bizarre. it was just phil and a nylon string guitar, and there were only about a dozen people in the audience. he kept running around south campus dining hall (that's where the radio station) is, playing songs in the stairwell, in the hallway, etc. very weird. now that i think about it, he had some kid with him playing keyboard on a few songs. it was just some kid he met in the midwest and was taking him around on tour with him. strange stuff.

booker, i saw the tour you saw when you saw them at MUC, though i saw it at bryn mawr in PA. it was very bizarre and totally not what i expected.

wolf colonel was touring with him, right?

i don't think wolf colonel played at the MUC show, which makes sense since a lot of those are one-offs. this was like ... two years ago, i want to say? in any case, as weird as phil is when he's performing, he's a pretty normal and nice fellow. well, people have different ideas of normal, but after talking to him i certainly didn't come away thinking, "boy is that guy out there!" which is sort of what i expected.

hahaha...

phil elvrum can take a shit after a burrito binge and record it onto four-track, and it would still sound great. i'd give it a 7.8.

Isn't that redundant?  Can't you just say "someone from BigYawn," and the jackass part is implied?

does anyone have any comments on the show? i can't say i was too impressed with phil elvrum's performance. he even seemed to think it was pretty inadequate himself, with his apology for being so "weird." calvin johnson was interesting though, aside from that really long story.
so... are all shows at the warehouse like that?
