This always gets referred to as the record Bowie was really into when he moved to Berlin. In fact, Froese (founder of Tangerine Dream) was his and Iggy’s initial host in Berlin while I guess they looked for a place.

It can be hard all these years later and with the development in technology to hear what exactly bowled over Bowie although it’s a very enjoyable listen.

After all these years I have decided to make a concerted effort to get into the German rock music from the 70s  (commonly referred to as krautrock) beyond just Kraftwerk and a smattering of Neu and Can.

Upgraded from my Plain records reissue circa 2003 which came with a big scratch and that record store DC CDs in Adams Morgan refused to take back. They closed not too long after.

Even though this is all analog nothing is going to fix a couple of tracks that really have a weak ass mix…it’s meant to sound that way- it’s the way Kevin Shields mixed it so it sounds weak and then pumps up mid song- but I am never going to be convinced it should sound like that… there was so much hype about this all analog reissue that I thought he had fixed that but no. Still a complete classic. 31 years later still sounds fresh.

30 years in and 13 albums in, Sloan is still cranking out the gems with Steady

Leah Weller's debut album "Freedom" is also sound amazing but both dad and Steve Craddock are involved in the production of it

Panic Shack - Baby Shack

Really enjoying this female punk outfit hailing from Cardiff

Guardian described them as "fusing thrashy early LA-style punk with choreography that owes something to the Go-Go's and Iron Maiden all at once.

one of their tracks is about breaking up over putting the milk in the mug before the hot tea...

and if you need the noise of the leading bi vegan punk band from the Faroe Islands (Formerly part of the Danish Kingdom it's located in the North Sea near Denmark, Scotland and Iceland and is famous for it's sweaters and sheep) here is the link to their Bandcamp.  Props to any band releasing 10 songs on a 7" inch single.

https://joeandtheshitboys.bandcamp.com/

and speaking of a band cranking out 5 songs in 5 minutes, got hipped to The Stools from Detroit self described as a "bluesy punk trio".. definitely a Detroit Hardcore/Punk sound

Charles Mingus - Mingus Ah Um

the evil streaming service creates an interesting weekly playlist and this week three of greatest recordings were included

Miles Davis - So What
Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Moanin'

and

Mingus's "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat", so now along with "Better Git It In Your Soul" i'm soaking in some Mingus

Of course hearing those Mingus tracks made me want to listen to the Absolute Beginners soundtrack which of course isn't fully available via streaming or even for digital purchase... The movie was a bit of mess but what a soundtrack...

Absolute Beginners is one of Bowie's finest songs and most likely to make me get something in my eye... Also, songs from Sade, Ray Davies, The Style Council, Jerry Dammers and two amazing Gil Evans arrangements of two of Mingus's finest...

and interestingly enough there is a lyric version of the Miles Davis's "So What" done by Smiley Culture on the soundtrack

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7N_6k3x7ng

and wow the Wikipedia entry on Smiley Culture's death....
