Wildildlife - Six

One of the reviews of it started with the line "This is what it would sound like if Animal Collective discovered doom metal." which is fairly accurate so far.

And I'm thoroughly enjoying this. And they're at the Talking Head soon. Hmm...

i love the power-pop kind of songs that he wrote for this one, and i thought the production style (lo-fi, distorted, wall of sound type of thing) was a fun change of pace

i don't think at this point that stephin merritt would make an album just like any of his others, so it's fun to see him taking chances with the instrumentation and sounds, and i think they generally work ... i'd love to hear these songs live where they won't be able to replicate the noisy sound of the album, there are some real pop gems on there

you're crazy, "california girls" is probably my favorite song of the year so far ... another sang by shirley simms ("the nun's litany"?) is great too

So this is an awesome wild ride of an album, kinda all over the place on the shoegaze, drone, lo-fi hissy, post-punk/goth sound. Like Working For a Nuclear Free City, it's one of those long double discs that doesn't immediately have a lot of hooks, but I end up playing it a lot anyway.

On the first couple of listens, I would say this is really good -- much better than the last two.  Of course, as with every Clinic album, it sounds pretty similar to all the others.
