listening to this one now. obviously very great, but my favorite part of it is that the audience is clearly still viewing him as this pure and noble folk/protest singer and you can tell that bob's like, "suckers, just wait for what i'm gonna spring on you in the next couple years." best moment might be when he introduces "it's alright ma" and the title gets a laugh and he goes, "yes, it's a very funny song."
i love how they presented this both sets of this show, the initial acoustic set and then the big fuck-you balls-out plugged-in set
you have to turn the volume up really loud, but you can definitely hear bob say "PLAY IT FUCKING LOUD!" to the Band after the judas comments and a second before kicking into "like a rolling stone" ... spine-tingling moment ... i also love his sneering "i don't belieeeve you, you're a LIAR" response to the heckler who said he'll never listen to him again
it was great being able to see video footage of this moment in "no direction home"
anyway, just an amazing historical document, and the music is so great [/b]
wait, now you're confusing me. you posted bootleg 6, which is the all acoustic show on halloween '64 but now you're talking about bootleg 4 which is the famous "royal albert hall" show. both are great, but i was talking about the all acoustic show where he could still play into people's protest singer mindsets and then spring new songs like "gates of eden" and "it's alright ma" on them, knowing it was just the tip of the iceberg.
bootleg 4 is, obviously, one of the greatest musical documents of all-time. and yeah, you can clearly hear both "judas!" and "play
fucking loud." but, oddly enough, bootleg 5 (rolling thunder tour) is my favorite to listen to these days.
