Musical perfection. I will never tire of Billie’s Columbia recordings. It’s remarkable that there has never been an official comprehensive release of them on LP….this series in the late 80s early 90s came closest but volume 8 and volume 9 only made it to vinyl in Brazil and are impossible to find. Some people take issue with the no noised sound on these compilations but I think they sound great. The CDs -gasp- sound great too. Of course there is a comprehensive release on a cd box set. Still it’s my opinion that this music is aesthetically far more pleasing when listening to it on vinyl.

I think this is the greatest American music ever made by it’s greatest singer produced in many cases by its greatest producer, John Hammond, in many cases with it’s greatest musicians (Lester Young and other Basie cohorts manage to cram in so much perfection on these 3 minute sides!) on it’s greatest record label (Columbia). Pure greatness.

Geezus thank god they kept the Acknowledgment takes with Archie Shepp off of the record. It turns the song into a horrible free jazz take….absolutely massacres it. I note there are SIX takes (four complete) until Coltrane must have realized it wasn’t happening!!

I didn’t even realize this had come out in 2015.

One of my favorites is a compilation called "Funky Funky Detroit" with Black Nasty, etc

another good starting point is "A Funky Trip - Detroit Funk from the Dave Hamilton Archive" - there are bunch of Dave Hamilton collections out there released by Ace records.  He was one of the few Motown artists that was allowed to do his own work outside of that organization, ran his own studio/labels.

Sy Smith - Until We Meet Again

A new to me singer, but Sy Smith has been around for many year.  Besides several self-released solo album she has sung backup for Whitney, a member of the Foreign Exchange and part of Chris Botti's ensemble.  Anyways, for this she works with Zo! and Tall Black Guy and the vocals are nice of soul and jazz influenced.  Loads of Fender Rhodes played by a local DC musician who goes by Dre King and Shelia E.   makes a guest appearance. Recommended if you are into late 70s R&B singer such as Patrice Rushen and Minnie Riperton.  Sy like Minnie has a five octave vocal range.  As a fan of indie soul, I will of course be checking out here other records
