« on: September 22, 2004, 03:03:00 pm »
I havent heard the walkmen much except that saturn commercial, but how are they? IS metric any good? The reason I am going is because Colin Steel is a friend of my brother's and for all i know he fucking blows, but its a show.

I have seen both metric and the walkmen twice live....

I think metric are one of the best live acts I have ever seen, I enjoy the walkmen for about 5 minutes then the guys shoutey singing tends to really annoy me.

It should be a good show.

I wonder if they'll turn the mic on this time.

i'll be there. i've yet to see the walkmen, but i sure saw jonathan fire*eater a whole hell of a lot and i saw the recoys a few times. but those were many years ago. i still like jf*e better, but i dig the walkmen. "the rat" is just an awesome song. so is "little house of savages." once they play that one in the peach pit or whatever its equivalent is, the walkmen will surely have many new fans.

Metric was great -- I enjoyed them more the last time I saw them, but I'm sure that's because it was a Saturday show and I didn't know to expect so much from Emily and the guys.

It was pretty funny too; they've definitely developed a dedicated fan base.  I had this guy [below]in front of me, screaming out "you fuckin' RAWK" in that very gutteral, guy scream:

And just a wee bit behind me, ggw, standing tall & firm with arms crossed, had the Cirque du Soleil dancer gyrating and going nuts with crazy swirly arm moves *right* next to him.  Quite a vision of diametrical approaches to the show-going experience.

I stayed for three songs of the Walkmen -- the singer drives me nuts.  Another gutteral "I'm screaming so hard I'm gonna pass out" dude.  I really liked the music of the first song, but liked the music less of the next two.  They may be better (to me) on album if the singer doesn't go so apeshit, but the combination of his screaming and Bob Dylan-esque intonation was too much to take.

Did GGW pull out the Walkmen gang sign, commonly referred to as "The Shocka"?

Naw brah.  I save that for the Wierd War shows.

Metric were pretty good.  Emily Haines was lackluster compared to the last time, but the rest of the band made up for it.  I thought the second half of their set was really excellent.  Much more trippy sounding than the poppy first half.

The dancing dude was goofy.  It was like a cross between the Robot and the Phish/Dead dance thingie.

Did he ever bump in to you?  I kept looking back discreetly, it was such a spectacle!

No.  He was actually quite proficient.  People would cut in front or behind him and he avoided them with no problem.

It sounds as if he was some sort of magical sprite.  Was this the case?

I think it was some sort of force field.  I set my hipster phasers on "glare" but they had no effect on his little dancing universe.

The Walkmen rocked.  Much better than their show six months ago.  Their sound is unique (organs, twinkling piano, singer's growl, hollow-sounding jangly guitars) and it really sets themselves apart from the rest of NYC garage/indie/whatever scene.  I know some people find the singer's voice annoying, but I think his screech is pretty impressive and on slower stuff his tone really conveys emotion.  But, he does come off as being a cocky prick. And, I don't want to forget the awesome work by the drummer...so tight, tight as a...well...drum.

Metric was alright.  They would be a mediocre band if they didn't have the cutesy chick fronting them. Plus, i don't know who came first but it kinda looks like the singer apes some of Karen O's stage moves.

Except that she doesn't come off as a complete weirdo (which I mean in a good way, but still...)

i thought the walkmen were decent, but hamilton really should chill out a little. i'd rather be able to understand the vocals than see him do that one jump move and scream a lot. they have good songs, but not too many of them came off all that well. and he should just forget about playing guitar. you're a singer, dude, face it. the jonathan richman song at the end was maybe the best song because he didn't try to outdo himself. i spotted stewart lupton (former singer for jonathan fire*eater) on the balcony and it made me long for the days of jf*e. a superior band, if you ask me. matt barrick remains one of the best damn drummers around tho. that guy is a blast to watch.
