9:30 and Black Cat mentioned on TV
« on: May 02, 2007, 08:37:00 am »
On Gilmore Girls last night, one of the characters, Zach, is asked to join a band called the Vapor Rubs. In listing the cities they are going to his wife points out that he'll be playing The 9:30, The Black Cat, and the Unitarian Church and how awesome that is. I found it funny they pointed out two DC venues.

Between that and the reference (twice!) to Barnacle Billy's (in Ogunquit, Maine), it may have been my all-time favorite "Gilmore Girls" for pop culture references ...

My daughter's goal in life is to have her band pop-culture-reffed on GG.

It's funny, my wife and I were debating the hotness of the mom character on GG last night, though we didn't actually see the show.

Did the whole "Fuck me Santa! Fuck me Santa!" thing factor in your discussion?

My mom called me and mentioned that, though what she was doing watching the Gilmore Girls is beyond me. Actually, my mom is pretty awesome, she got me PJ Harvey's autograph (long but cool story...PJ was visiting Steve Alibini, who lived across the street, and on a total whim my mom recognized her, stopped her and asked her if she would sign an autograph for me).

Yeah, Lauren Graham.  Never peeped the show personally, but that has absolutely no adverse effect on the fact that she can get it.  She can SO get it.

No, I didn't pull that one out. One doesn't want to appear to be OVERLY appreciative of other hot women, particularly when one's wife doesn't share the same opinion.

She generally thinks I set my standards too low when it comes to judging hotness.

Gilmore Girls usually has cool musical references but they were trying way to hard last night to cram as many in as possible... Tokyo Police Club, Grizzle Bear, the already mentioned clubs and the Magic Stick in Detroit.

they sort hooked me when they name dropped the Sugarplastic in an early season.

and Sebastian Bach was fun to watch when he was part of Lane's band
T.Rex

there was also a moment when rory and laine go on a double date (first season maybe?) and laine is with rory's BF's friend and he's wearing a fugazi shirt (the cover of end hits  i think) and laine asks him about it but he says something like "uh, it's my sister's shirt".

i thought it was funny that it sounded like they were going to play the 9:30 *and* the black cat on the same tour.

 has that even ever happened?

I must admit, after using a lame Franz Ferdinand joke (twice) I was a bit worried about Gilmore Girls but since then they have gotten back on track with a great rant on the wonderfulness of Art Brut.

I agree that they overdid the band and club references last night (plus it's preposterous that a band would play both the Black Cat and the 9:30 Club on the same tour), but that is one of the reasons why I like that show. I remember being floored when Gilmore Girls first mentioned Arcade Fire in February 2005, just days after they played the 9:30 Club.

RORY: Hey, do you want Arcade Fire?
 LORELAI: I don't know, do I?
 RORY: Yes.
 LORELAI: Then yes.

A tad impressed they mentioned BC in addition.
After the club mentions, Zach's references are a little too expected. Nonetheless, good for them for mentioning real clubs and artists. I still watch for these few and far between episodes w/ Laine, Zach, etc. Perhaps that's why they rattle off so many, it's been ages since they've had a good music exchange..plus new writers. Can't remember my favorite exchange, but there's been a couple, mostly from the band w/ Sebastian. I remember being impressed w/ Laine's collection hidden in her floorboards.
Otherwise, this show has been over for a long time. The characters never evolved and Rory is pretty whiney even after Yale.
