Show reviews and news from the OC
« on: July 07, 2004, 02:25:00 pm »
Greetings from the OC.....Just a quick music update from the OC before I head to Vegas for a bachelor party.

Checked out the VANS Warped Tour last Thurs/Fri.  Bad Religion and Flogging Molly (surprisingly) were really good.  Most others were really not.  The Vandals were alright (though they played mostly new stuff) and so were TSOL, but I didn't really get into most of these newer punk bands.  And the angry rockers of this millenium, well, they're just angry.  Julliette Lewis and the Licks could be the worst thing I've ever seen, yet I was still turned on.   One last observation:  If you close your eyes and listen to Coheed and Cambria, you'd swear Geddy Lee was singing.  Overall: 3 out of 5 because I didn't have to pay.  2 out of 5 if I had paid.

Then there was  The Hootenanny, a show which I have enjoyed tremendously in the past and looked forward to this year, but it utterly sucked.  In keeping with our 2004 theme - traffic was abysmal and caused us to miss much of the beginning of the show.  Why do promoters choose venues with one way in an and one way out?  My original thoughts that this world really needs more tits and tats have gone by the way side - they're all hanging out together in Southern California, god bless 'em.  Anyhow, I only caught the second half of the Kingbees, but enjoyed the 15-20 minutes I saw.  Just about every band on the side stage had poor sound quality, none worse than Jesse Dayton, who I was really looking forward to.  He was so pissed, I'm shocked he didn't go kick the crap out of the sound guy himself.  What a bummer to sqaunder an opportunity to see him in such a small place.  The Blasters were good, the Horror Pops were just horrible, and the only great part The Supersuckers - Eddie Spaghetti and the boys still shred.  They deserved much more then the 30 minute time slot they were allotted.  The Reverend Horton Heat had poor sound quality as well (or they just sounded bad, I couldn't tell) and the threat of traffic kept us from staying through the duration of The Cramps, but I've seen them a million times and they sounded the same.  Overall, 1 out of 5, and but for the Supersuckers, it would have been a zero out of 5.  Total let down.

Indie 103 FM is my new favorite broadcast radio station, despite the fact that it's owned by Clear Channel, a fact that I have fought hard to not choke on.  Give it a listen.  Steve Jones of the Clash hosts a show on there from noon to 2 Pacific Time that makes me laugh (though many others hate it).  They also have segments of "What's new from the UK" and other cool stuff.  For Alt-Country fans, they have an Americana show too.

The new hot single out here is "Run" by Snow Patrol.  It's on Indie 103 and KROQ all the time.  If you look back to the original Snow Patrol posts I think you'll see how much I liked it back then so it's good to hear it getting some air time.

Social Distortion announced their first show:  They're playing  San Diego's Street Scene on August 27/28.

I saw my first car chase in years last night.  Over an hour long and covered nearly 100 miles.  The guy threatened shoot himself after he got out of the car and the Fox cameras went fuzzy, but the other local channels were willing to let us see it.  Good times.  I forgot how much I enjoyed those...

Lastly, the lines for Michael Moore's new film, well, what lines?  They don't exist.  There are more protesters then movie goers in the conservative hot bed known as Orange County.

The weather is too nice for me to sit inside and keep typing so by for now.

 Smackie.

Another observation....

We got my mom XM Radio for Mothers Day and this is the first time I've used it for an extended period of time.  Do the Payola bans on broadcast radio not apply to Satellite radio because it sure seems like the Counting Crows have paid a lot of money to be on all the f#$%ing time on multiple XM Channels?

Hey Indie 103 FM? Yeah we're talking to you... You guys are fucking pussies. Yeah we know everyone is licking your ass for some reason right now, but we??re blowing the whistle on you corporate rock posers. Here??s a NEWSFLASH: You guys wave the ??Indie? flag so hard it??s fucking gross. Because being owned by Clear Channel is pretty fucking ??Independent? man. And playing the fuck out of shitty major label bands like The Vines, The Thrills, The Stills, Snow Patrol, Foo Fighters, Auf Der Maur, Muse, Beastie Boys, and The Strokes is pretty fucking ??Indie? as well. And in case you didn??t get the memo, putting on shows at The Key Club and The Viper Room is completely fucking lame, you??d be hard pressed to find a lamer venue in Hollywood than either. For those not in the know, The Key Club is a mix of MTV??s ??the Grind?, and the Nookie video. No one wants to go to that piece of shit club, who wants to go where Methods Of Mayhem play every weekend? And The Viper room now looks like Dublins plus it ain??t even owned by Johnny Depp anymore so no ones cares at all now. Pull your fucking heads outta your pussies cuz you guys used to play some cool shit before you gave all those geriatrics their little shows. Don??t give us a show though, cuz we??re like young, run an INDIE label in Los Angeles and are in bands that tour. That??d be like lame dude. Plus our playlists (click here to see those) have bands on em that are good and that you??ve never heard? fuck that man! Who wants to hear new music that??s rad? Not you that??s for sure. Play that Beastie Boys song one more time geeks.

Speaking of whhhhhhack, Winner of the ??LA Weekly??s Best Radio Show? and self proclaimed ??inventor of punk rock?, Steve Jones, pays $250 for facials from the same person who does Jennifer Aniston. Yeah dude, that??s fucking punk. And your shows playlist blows for you being in Sex Pistols. Come to think of it quit announcing you were in the Sex Pistols every fifteen minutes, everyone knows man. And you guys didn??t invent punk rock, The Stooges did. You covered No Fun ?so sit down old man. Plus, what have you done for the past 30 years besides trying to cash in on the past and creep out young chicks in Hollywood who have no idea who you??re alzheimers ass is anyway? Did we mention that you??re old? Dork.

And speaking of old dudes on INDIE 103, they gave Henry Rollins a show too. Great, now we get to hear that jock talk about how he used to be in a cool band (Black Flag) but since then all he??s done is make lame jock metal records, lame movies, and lift weighs. Thanks for that INDEPENDENT 103. You guys are rad!

Between that and calling the Dust Brothers the Chemical Brothers a few weeks ago, I'm really starting to wonder about myself these days.....3 months into my 30's and I'm making some pretty silly mistakes that I never would have made in the past.

Latest News:

The new Angels owner, Arte Moreno, has asked the league to change the name of the Anaheim Angels to the Los Angeles Angels.  No word on how likley this rumor is to becoming reality, but I will officailly disavow all allegiance to the Halo's if this happens.  And I will be arrested for going onto the field (again) to protest the change in front of 40,000 people.  That's how we do things in the OC.

No music news.  I saw a few bands last night at the Detriot Bar.  Nothing special, but Calexico is playing there on Monday and if I get back from Vegas in time I'm going to check it out.  The place is tiny and should make for a great show!
