Shocking revelation: Phish fans are anti-semites!  I went to see Oysterhead (cause as a bass player it's my solumn duty to worship Mr. Claypool), and although the show was very much sold out, the venue was 90% empty for the opening act . . . a Klesmer Band!

Oh, and that Phish guy is one greedy fuck.  He had two musicians more talented than him onstage and they got maybe a solo each.

It reminds me of Our Band Could Be Your Life, where seemingly every band in the book opens for PiL and has a crap experience doing so.

Another question, if hippies are supposed to be all natural, why do so many of them smoke cigarettes?  Seems to kinda go against their hemp and birkenstock lifestyle.

I've seen most of those top 20 bands (well, 14) and U2 and Radiohead would be my top 2 (major bias on Radiohead though, i would love them no matter what)   The rest is crap, sans Metallica before 1990. Chemical Brothers, Sunny Day Real Estate and The White Stripes are all better than Phish!!!  jeepers.

I wonder if the number of bands you have seen on this list would be inversely propotional to your score on the hipness quiz.

The bands on the list seem to be very, very mainstream, and are a reflection of the readers of a very, very mainstream music magazine (Rolling Stone).

Doesn't being/liking the mainstream equate to being not hip?

That's what I was afraid you meant but wanted to make sure before I corrected you.

If you have to use a book to tell you what's hip, then, by definition, you're not hip at all.  By the time that book went to press, it was already unhip.

The vast majority of those bands I saw when I was a teenager back in Hollywood at places no bigger than the 9:30 club.  Just because they reached some sort of popularity, it's no longer hip to like them?  Their live shows aren't great anymore?  That's a load of bollocks and you know it.

If you continue to tell enough people how great alt-country is, you'd best be careful, one or two might listen to you and tell someone else.  Then you (and it) won't be hip?  Come on...

I think you'd have been keenly aware of or knowledgeable about the latest trends or developments if you would have predicted the success of u2's "All that you can't...." considering their previous lack of success with Zooropa and Pop.  And that live show, well it was the greatest live show I've seen in the last 5 years, whether its hip to like them or not.

I wasn't saying it was good or bad to be hip or unhip, or to be mainstream or non-mainstream.

Isn't one of the reasons such magazines as Rolling Stone, Details, Maxim, etc exist so that their readers can find out what is hip?

I'm not saying U2 doesn't put on a great show or anything like that. I'm just saying that I though being "hip" was in part based on deliberately liking stuff that that is obscure, and shunning that which the masses likes.

For the record, I failed the hipster quiz too.

With all of their tape loops going, they hardly resemble anything country anymore.

With all of his wrinkles, Johnny Cash doesn't resemble Johnny Cash anymore.

If anyone likes or dislikes anything based on whether other people like it or not.  you truly suck and are definitely NOT hip.

So are you implying that being HIP is a good thing to be?
