New law or not?
« on: February 09, 2007, 11:51:00 pm »
Don't know if I should bring this up agian, but whatever happened to the emergency power thing where they wanted to have underage people banned from clubs that sell alcohol? I haven't heard anything about it since it blew up about 3 weeks ago.

 Update anyone?

They are working on possible legislation and new licensing.  A different type of license will likely be created that would continue to allow us at 9:30, Black Cat, and maybe Rock N' Roll Hotel - i.e. actual venues.
But we really have to wait and see until they come out with something, because it'll take a little while, and I honestly do not trust DC politicians.

I'm still very worried.  I also believe that if they shut down all the other clubs for underage kids and allow them only at two or three or four, the Cat etc could begin to attract trouble.  But who knows.  I mean, the kids have to go somewhere...

It has nothing to do with the circumstances of the shooting, but the place where that girl got shot turned out to be a little bit sketch.  There were kids testifying that they could slip the bartender a 10-spot and get served.  If you tried that at the Cat or the dirty 30, you'd be out on the sidewalk so fast you wouldn't remember how you got there.

I don't think even DC pols are dumb enough to do anything that would jeopardize (that word is hard to spell  :(  ) those two clubs.  I mean, the Cat is hugely responsible for the revitalization of the 14th Street corridor.  They don't want to mess with that.

There is, however, a tendency of DC pols to go after DC's indigenous music, go-go, and it would be unfortunate, and somewhat racist-appearing, if DC kids can no longer go to go-go shows but the predominately white folx' clubs continue with unfettered access.

Did anyone hear what the circumstances of the shooting were? It was 2 am in the morning when it all went down and she was in a go go club. The parents of the girl who was shot were blaming the police for not arriving sooner. My question is, what kind of parents let their kids out at 2 am in the morning? And without knowing where they are nontheless. The whole thing just stinks and kicking out underage people out of music venues that serve alcohol just seems wrong.

The family did know where the girl was, in fact she was out with some of her relatives.

Nothing wrong with a 17 year old being out at 2:00 a.m.   That's totally normal.

 The girl did nothing wrong.

I'm confused with your argument, you first questioned the type of parent that would let a kid out at 2am, but then said the ban sucked...?

 It does suck.

nevertheless, a trusting and understanding parent will let their kid out at 2am.  If you have a good, trustworthy kid going out with good, trustworthy friends, there is absolutely nothing wrong with letting them go see a band and go dancing with their friends on a weekend.  It is a very productive release for people who enjoy that stuff.

The problem is not in the parenting.  If the club claims not to serve alcohol to minors but does it anyway, and additionally puts its patrons in danger, it is not a place  anyone  should trust at 2am.  But that's not the parents - that's lazy law enforcement.

Shows at the Black Cat run well into 2am all the time, but no one seems eager to gun up the place.  And god be damned if anyone with Xed hands gets away with even sipping a drink in there.  This is because it is a responsible venue.  There is no point in punishing the responsible venues and the people that frequent them.

So that's why this same city gov't is offering to help House of Blues get into a location but never did the same for any local owner who did this out of pocket? (from what I've gathered)

I hardly trust anything the City Council has proposed considering they're just trying to put a band-aid on an issue that they've dropped the ball on. They're also looking at getting more money out of those responsible license holders by making them apply for a new type of "live under 21" type license as well as pay $1 per head for anyone under 21 for some new "task force" to enforce underage drinking. I kinda thought that's what the ABC and MPD were suppose to be doing anyway when they're stopping into these establishments, or was it to flirt with the female patrons?

The Council needs to step back and look at the existing laws in place and how they can better enforce them. They also need to take responsibility for the death that occurred considering the same club should have been shut down back in November when there were two back-to-back incidents involving underage minors.
