Lorelei http://www.textilesounds.com/ Lorelei began in 1990 as a 5-piece in Washington, DC in the heyday of the city's indie scene, but quickly stripped down to three members in 1992 after one single. We released several recordings on Slumberland Records, including the 1994 LP,
Everyone Must Touch the Stove, plus a few recordings for other labels. Over the years, Lorelei often played live with our Slumberland labelmates -- the Ropers, Small Factory, Whorl, Velocity Girl, Honeybunch, Jane Pow, the Swirlies, and the Lily's -- and with the likes of the Wedding Present, Slowdive, Bailter Space, Unrest, Laika, Boyracer, and Labradford. Following the release of
Everyone Must Touch the Stove and after playing together for almost six years, Lorelei members decided to move to different coasts and disband in 1996. From there, Lorelei members went off to persue other projects including LU, Chessie, Camping, and RDK. Following their hiatus as a band, Lorelei began working together again in 2003, culminating in Lorelei's first release in eight years, the
Informed By The Future 12" on Matt's Textilesounds imprint. Now, in 2006, Lorelei's members have found themselves back in Washington, DC and have been playing together again. Lorelei will return for a show on Ocotber 25th in DC and perhaps a few others later this winter.
"Lorelei was a key component of the "other" part of the vibrant mid-'90s D.C. indie rock scene. While people tend to associate the city with the Dischord sound, Slumberland Records was just as vital and holds a very dear place in the hearts of many former college radio DJs and, well, friends of college radio DJs. No label was responsible for more top-notch, dreamy indie-pop. Lorelei's 1996 release
Everyone Must Touch the Stove stands next to albums from the Ropers, Velocity Girl and the Lilys as excellent examples of this sound. The group has been sort of on-and-off over the past few years, but seems to be gearing up to give it another go, starting with tonight's show at DC9." (Washington Post)
Masha Qrella http://www.monika-enterprise.de/masha.html Itâ??s here now, totally out of the blue: The first solo-album titled Luck by Masha Qrella, the Contriva guitarist/bass player and Mina keyboarder. Masha put the record together in secret. After she had finished the recordings completely, she dropped first some hints about her project and finally slipped a handful of burned CDs into friends' CD players.
But although this publication has been a surprise, many people may have been waiting and hoping for it secretly: the tracks of the two instrumental bands that Masha Qrella participates in have always had a song-oriented structure, even though they didnâ??t use words. Contriva and Mina make an exciting contribution by creating one sound from four very individual musicians, whereas in the two songs in which Masha is singing (Contriva´s "Next Time" and Mina´s "Desktop") the sound got more concrete and intimate. One could hear that this was a direction to be explored more thoroughly.
Now, on
Luck, Masha Qrella is following some of her own concepts with even greater care. And the songs turned out as brightly beautiful and restrainedly passionate as her voice sounds. On the surface you can hear a production with soul and skill, that sometimes breaks a drum loop suddenly, that indulges in one gap or another and that leaves a note where it has been dropped. The tracks that first sound roughly put together in a way that is common in hip-hop, turn out to be merely the rough medium for the more airy song structures that they transport. There is, next to Mina and Contriva, echoes of Elliot Smith and Robert Wyatt in the album. The production also evokes associations with Jim O`Rourke and Peaches.
The instruments, bass, guitar, drums and keyboards, are mostly played by Masha herself and hints to a band sound. The songs oscillate between sounding organically formed and highly constructed because of the exceptional production details. The connection between these two poles is the singing. The English lyrics are mostly concerned with love and friendship. Masha Qrella, within her doubts, has found a safe base from which she reflects and expresses her feelings towards her surroundings. Despite this her lyrics stay vague enough to leave room for the listeners` interpretation.
Luck is a personal and extraordinary album. Masha Qrella`s debut is initially challenging, but then the music warmly and elegantly nestles against the walls of every room, where it stays present for a long time, even after the last note has faded away.
