Pearl Jam Going Steady

 First off a  HUGE thanks to Grotty for the ticket hookup.  I owe you a drink or few the next time our paths cross.
 
 7pm. Eddie Vedder and his el neato Telecaster shaped uklele to sing us a song and introduce the Buzzcocks.
 
 The Buzzcocks proceed to play 19 songs in 50 minutes, the last one being a self indulgent five minutes.  Ten of which taken from "Singles Going Steady".  The others just as classic as the rest.
 
 8:30pm Pearl Jam hit the stage for 2.5 hours of personal and fan favorites.  Lots of happy fans singing along at the top of their lungs.  My favs included a blistering "Even Flow", "Given to Fly", and "Black".  Also of note was the cover of Lennon's "Gimme Some Truth" a bit like the Generation X version.
 
 Now come the encores always worth the price of admission at a Pearl Jam show.  This one a bit more fun as the band had a confab between each song as what to play next.  "Spin The Black Circle" my fav Pearl Jam song, along with "Jeremy" and "Why Go" which hasn't apparently been done live in years.  Wasn't to jazzed about their cover of "Know Your Rights", the song has a great message, but even the Clash's is a bit lacking.
 
 I stuck around for the second encore hoping for "Baba O'Reilly" but instead got "Rocking in the Free World", (Neil's latest live version was better) and "Yellow Ledbetter".
 
 11:30 until 12:30 stuck in that shithole of a parking lot, listening to The Pixies, Thin Lizzy, The Housemartins, etc.
 
 Again thanks to Grotty... Pearl Jam is deffo one of those bands you need to see at least twice on a tour.  The band seem looser and more energized then the Philly show.  Ed was much talkative and even gave a shout out to Ian McKaye who was backstage.  Even Ian had the sense to split early to avoid the traffic.

There is no band better to their fans.  Or to their opening band -- my friend who got us the tickets is friends with the engineer who records the shows for the bootlegs.  He mentioned that Eddie always comes out before the opening band to sing a little ditty and possibly get some of the kids into their seats.  Bless him.
 
 I missed half of the Buzzcocks as we got a backstage tour, but what I heard really ripped.  Due to the traffic, though, there weren't many folks in their seats for the 'Cocks, so their high level energy seemed a little out of place.  Can Steve Diggle write a harmonious hook or what!?!  By the way, if you like the Buzzcocks at all, their latest album (self titled) kicks.
 
 And PJ was fantastic, though I can't compare it to other shows (I haven't seen them live doing their own shows -- I know, flog me!).  The energy was just amazing.  I won't miss them again.
 
 And I thought "Rockin' in the Free World" was suprisingly great.  Not a song I love normally, but the band did a great job with it.
 
 Kosmo, I found a way out of the parking lot and got back home into the city by 12:15 -- I'm one lucky gal (because I did stay for both encores).  But again, Eddie was so great by mentioning and apparently feeling lousy about the awful traffic situation that is Nissan Pavillion.  They should tear that mother down and rebuild Merriweather instead.....
 
 PS, a bunch of young guys behind be kept screaming "Gurney Frank."  Any idea what this is or means??

that would be "Dirty Frank", it's a very early Pearl Jam song that shows up on a b-side.  the "dirty frank" guys appear to be legendary amongst the ten club fans for always shouting that request

That's so funny.  I swear, we were *watching* them chant, and it looked like Gurney Frank.  Must be kind of obscure -- a bunch of people around us didn't know what they were yelling.

i was there last nite, it was a pretty decent show, i haven't listened to pearl jam really in about 10 years and just went to the show cos a group of friends was going...i was impressed...they are really good live!
 
 eddie vedder did not seem too thrilled about the traffic around nissan tho, i thought that was pretty funny
 
 anyways, it was  a nice evening and i'm glad i went

sort of... with all the money they made on the first album that setup a r&d project with microsloth to create a computer generated version of themselves so that stay at home and surf the web instead of recording and touring

Ah, how I would have loved to see the Buzzcocks. Truly one of the finest bands to ever walk the planet.  Anyone know if they played "I Don't Know What to Do With My Life", "Orgasm Addict" or anything else off A Different Kind of Tension? I love that LP.  Another Music In a Different Kitchen is great, too.

hmmm... the buzzcocks were great probably the best 50 minutes of songs i've heard in awhile.  however i'm inclinded to see whats up the night of the show. i.e. if it sellsout i wont be heartbroken.  i might also wait for another swing thru the us. the current lineup is great seeing as they have been together longer than the orginial lineup.  i'm being a big flake OK!  :eek:

 As an FYI, to this day the Buzzcocks playing the 9:30 Club in 1992 or 1993 was one of the best concerts I've ever seen.  Absolutely amazing.  I will see them anywhere, though the big huge empty venue did them little justice last night.
