Yes, even the internet broadcast may be gone in two weeks:

I never listened to that station anyway.

I did try awhile ago, but my work was blocking the station, just as they do KEXP.

Blame it on the fucking RIAA!!! Ultimately, this is their doing.

 From WOXY's site:

"Believe it or not, it would cost more to run this Internet radio station (with half the staff) than it ever did to run our terrestrial radio station. The main reason is the costs of music performance royalties and bandwidth for our audio streaming. Unlike traditional AM and FM radio where the cost of operating the transmitter is fixed no matter how many people listen, on the Internet our costs go up for each additional person that tunes in. With our online audience approaching 50,000 unique listeners and growing every month, the already substantial costs continue to rise with no significant revenue stream to pay for them."

Any of you who don't understand what the RIAA has done in it's efforts to supposedly protect the artists needs to understand that stations like WOXY via the internet are sometimes crucial to a band being able to be heard by anyone outside of their local venues. Lord knows, Clear Crap, Infinity and MTV certainly won't be there to give them a helping hand!

Though I did not listen to WOXY, this greatly pains me to see this happen. More and more stations are going off-line because of the RIAA and the monopolies are taking more and more control while only allowing us to hear the crap that they will allow us to hear. No, the artists were not being ripped off via interent radio stations, as the RIAA would have you believe. Instead, they were receiving much needed cheap or free advertising and we, the listeners, were buying their music.

Isn't it ironic that in order to webcast you have to pay a fee to SoundExchange, the organization setup by the RIAA to collect royalities for the record companies.  This is in addition to the fees collected by ASCAP, BMI, etc on behalf of the songwriters.

But in the broadcast world there is no fee collected by Record companies just the songwriter royalities. In fact the record companies are the ones paying to get thier music on the air via promotional consideration.

I'll bet money collected by SoundExchange goes right back into fighting file sharing  and the artists see none of it....

It's unbelievable how small internet radio got screwed. Sure, artists should be compensated, but these stations also promote bands and their CDs and tours, often with handy "buy the record!" links next to the song listing. It's time for the Jenny Toomey March on Washington.

personally i don't have a problem with paying the songwriters for the use of the song in an internet broadcast via ascap, bmi, etc.  it's the fee now being charged on behalf the record company that really knocks a small broadcaster out of the water...

As a farewell, WOXY is playing the best of 97 A-Z starting today.  A soundtrack of their life if you will.  It's a shame such a great thing is forced to end.

So does anyone have any good recommendations for a WOXY replacement. I will miss its lite indie fare immensley. I guess it was the first place I heard a whole load of bands and songs I now really love.....

Metric and the Tyde are two faves that come to mind.

www.3wk.com - may include too much wank for you, as if you could ever get enough of wanking

www.kexp.org - not as strictly indie as woxy was

but you knew those two didnt you?

KEXP seems a natural choice.

Some people have been talking about some indie station on Netscape Radio.  I haven't heard it.

Netscape radio (www.spinner.com) has:
 indie rock
 new indie
 indie rock mix
 indie rock grrls
 melancholia (mostly indie folk/pop)

Great, great programming that XM should pay attention to.

Unfortunately unless you're on AOLBroadband you can only listen for a few hours a day.

you can also try exploring shoutcast.com  which is what the iTunes radio feature is actually a front end for.  iTunes radio just filters out some of the 6000+ server streams, so there is loads more to checkout at shoutcast.

live365.com has several niche channels as well, but one has to pay four dollars a month to listen without inserted audio ads, etc.
