bike trails to Birchmere
« on: August 04, 2005, 10:08:00 am »
ok, crazy biker girl is at it again.

i looked at the map on the birchmere site, and it seems the place is like 1/2 mile south of the 4 mile run trail.  which would mean i could take the 14th street bridge to the mt vernon trail to the 4 mile run trail and get there in less than 30 min.

 has anyone done this?

not a biker so have never done it, but it is not that far off route 1 and there are a fair amount of trails in the area so I imagine it is possible, but you should also keep in mind the Birchmere neighborhodd isnt the best

also, do you think you could log in to Yahoo and reject (or accept) my trade offer, thanks!

Sounds right (coming from a non-local).

Have you used this bike route tool?

according to the birchmere, this is how you get there:

 From Washington DC
14th sreet south across 14th street bridge.
Take left hand exit for Rte 1 South.
Follow Rte 1 thru Crystal City, to stoplight at Glebe Rd.
 Turn right onto Glebe Rd.
Follow to second stoplight, turn left onto Mt.. Vernon Ave.
Go approx .4 miles & we're on the left, just past the AutoZone, at 3701

 nothing about trails.

i mean, you could bike that route, but you'd have to be somewhat suicidal.  why do it when there are trails available?

why bike when you can drive a car.  plus, according to the national weather service, you should really stay in an air conditioned environment and stay out of the sun.

...HEAT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM NOON TODAY TO 8 PM EDT
 THIS EVENING...

HIGH PRESSURE WILL SLIDE OFF THE ATLANTIC COAST THIS AFTERNOON...
PUMPING HOT AND HUMID AIR ACROSS THE REGION. HIGH TEMPERATURES IN
THE MID 90S COMBINED WITH HIGH HUMIDITY LEVELS WILL PRODUCE HEAT
INDEX VALUES AROUND 100 DEGREES THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING.

A HEAT ADVISORY MEANS THAT THE COMBINATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURES
AND HUMIDITY WILL COMBINE TO CREATE A SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT
INJURIES ARE POSSIBLE. IT IS BEST TO SEEK AN AIR CONDITIONED
ENVIRONMENT DURING THE HOTTEST PART OF THE DAY. IF THAT IS NOT
POSSIBLE...DRINK PLENTY OF FLUIDS AND STAY OUT OF THE SUN. THE
ELDERLY AND THE YOUNG ARE MOST SUSCEPTIBLE TO HEAT RELATED
INJURIES...SO BE SURE TO CHECK ON ELDERLY RELATIVES AND NEIGHBORS.

Plus, there are a lot of dangerous Mexican gangs roaming the area.

Only if you are lazy and out of shape or over 80. The rest of us ignore the heat advisories and still manage to have fun on our bikes.

Here here!  For me, a heat advisory just means "maybe you should drink some water."
