Robbie Williams: Music Piracy Great
CANNES, France (Variety) -- British pop star Robbie Williams shocked attendees Sunday at music industry confab Midem by declaring piracy a good idea.
"I think it's great, really I do," Williams, who recently signed a reported $120 million deal with EMI/Capitol, said at a press conference. "There's nothing anyone can do about it. I'm sure my record label would hate me saying it, and my management and accountants."
In the past, Williams has supported moves to prevent the illegal downloading of music. He signed a petition in July 2000 that called on the European Union Copyright Directive to allow artists to use technology to protect their work and to stop Net piracy.
Music execs infuriated
Williams' views infuriated music execs and his remarks drew a response from Jay Berman, chief executive of the International Federation of Phonographic Industries, in his keynote speech.
Berman said it was a myth that the Internet would kill the music industry. "On the contrary, in 2003 we are going to be working the Internet much harder, to promote new legitimate services while at the same time actively targeting the sources of online piracy."
The Recording Industry Association of America, sister body of IFPI, released figures Sunday that claimed revenue lost to the music industry through CD and online piracy was up by 20 percent to more than $5 billion.
Marketing tool?
Hip-hop star Wyclef Jean told Daily Variety that while piracy was bad for the industry, he recognized its potential as a marketing tool. "It affects artists, but (downloading) still gives us the credibility factor. But they have got to find a way to control it, as it is killing the business."
Chris Schwartz, chief executive of Ruffhouse Nation, the Columbia-backed label responsible for the success of the Fugees, agreed with Jean. "Piracy is the quickest way to get a record out," he said. "There was a time early in my days with Columbia Records, when I was glad if my record got bootlegged."
Schwartz made it clear he was against mass copying or organized piracy: "I'm not condoning piracy in any way."
Culture minister Kim Howells has since condemned Williams' remarks, accusing him of supporting drug and prostitution rackets.
Mr Howells said he was "appalled" at the star's comments which, he said, amounted to "defending theft".

Executives discuss the future of the industry at Cannes
He attacked Williams during an online chat for the Guardian newspaper website.
"Robbie Williams has an £80m contract and probably doesn't worry too much about all the singers, songwriters, musicians and music publishers who depend entirely for a living on receiving an honest revenue from sales of their product," he said.
Mr Howells added that Williams' comments were helping "do the work for international gangs involved in drugs and prostitution who find music piracy an excellent way of laundering profits".
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/2676117.stm

Invention Of Wheel Followed By Marketing Campaign Promoting Wheel's Life-enhancing Properties, Says Archaeologist

Ancient drawings discovered in a cave in the Czech Republic suggest that the
invention of the wheel may have been followed by a prehistoric 'promotional
campaign' extolling the virtues of the wheel.
The drawings are thought to date from 10,000 years ago, around the time many
believe the wheel was invented, and show humans apparently deriving strength
and power from the wheel.
"One can imagine primitive humans being suspicious of this new invention," said
Dr. Dmitri Szawjk, leader of the team of archaeologists that has been studying the
caves near the village of Ostrov u Macochy. "It would appear that someone decided to
try to communicate the benefits of the wheel via these drawings, perhaps to
encourage others to obtain and use one."

 The Szawjk drawings

Running his finger along the dimly-lit wall, Dr. Szawjk interprets the line of
symbols etched onto the surface: "Wheel...Make you feel strong...Have wheel...
Defeat others...Wheel...Good."
Szawjk believes the drawings offer a glimpse into the far reaches of human
history and illustrate how far we have come as a species.
"These images show that humans were far less intelligent then and could have
been persuaded to acquire something they didn't really want simply by being
exposed to a few crude images," said Szawjk. "Of course, we are far more
advanced today."

Wheel good. Defeat others.

Szawjk believes these and other drawings may have played an integral part in the
spread of the wheel amongst human communities in the western hemisphere.
The last image in the group remains a puzzle, however. It depicts two male
figures engaging in some for of celebratory dance in honour of the wheel. The
figures appear to have penile erections.
"This is the most mysterious drawing," says Szawjk. "It suggests the artist is
trying to associate the wheel with masculinity and virility. But I doubt even
our primitive ancestors would have felt that way about an inanimate object."
Szawjk's findings are expected to be published later this month.
