More gear stolen

Raveonettes gear stolen:
 
 This is a message from their tour manager Dylan
 Kerbrat.
 
 Ok. So I woke up this morning to find the VAN and Gear
 stolen.
 
 please pass on. Especially you new york/new jersey
 people.
 
 The Raveonettes rental van and gear was stolen in
 brooklyn, ny sometime between 10 pm thursday the 6th
 and 9 am friday the 7th of october.
 
 all gear was in road cases that say the RAVEONETTES on
 it. the following was stolen.
 
 Vintge fender jazzmasters and a jag
 Vintage Gretch "Chet Atkins"
 Rickenbacher bass
 Fender p bass
 
 3 Devilles
 1 4x12 fender cabe
 1 bassman head
 a full fender bass rig.
 
 tons of outboard sound gear.
 
 it was in a Red E 350 15 passanger van.

this has happened like 438732432 times in the last month to bands playing in NYC.  hmmm...

While I feel real bad for all these bands getting ripped off...WHAT THE HELL ARE THEY THINKING LEAVING A VAN OUT ON THE STREET IN FREAKING NEW YORK CITY WITH THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS WORTH OF GEAR INSIDE?  OVERNIGHT?

I gotta agree with Chaz, it's not like this hasn't happened to a zillion bands in NYC over the last three months, years, decades.  Drop the 80 bucks and park in a secure garage.  It's cheaper than re-outfitting a band.

because i'm used to living in a neighborhood with lots of thieves and desperate people, every time a band stays at my place in shaw-howard/ledroit park, i tell them to either bring all of their valuable gear inside, or have somebody sleep in the van. if there is something valuable in the van, and nobody is there to guard it, it WILL get stolen.

 I use to know a band who had their gear stolen once and because of that, got themselves a  wonderfully loyal, loving yet scary dog that they took on all of their road trips. Might not be the best solution during extreme weather but they never had their rig messed with again.

 Interesting fact: I know some guys who told Anton (BJM) and the band not to park their van where they did but Anton being Anton refused to listen and left it where it was. Lo and behold, as my friends had warned them, their entire rig was stolen.

 Lastly, as much as I agree that street smarts must be taken on the road with one to the nth degree, I can't stand the attitude of dismissing these crimes. Besides being very cold hearted, it allows the mind to accept the thieving bastards into our society rather than being up at arms and demanding that our law enforcement agencies do their fucking jobs and step up some action on the front. Not that any band wants the cops breathing down their backs but doing very little about these crimes only breeds even more crime. It's just like the one broken window theory. Sometimes we have to take a stand and that stand isn't welcoming the crooks into your life, neighborhood or van!

I don't think anyone here is dismissing these crimes or being cold hearted in the slightest.  I feel bad for anyone that gets ripped off under any circumstances.  But these incidents could have been prevented very easily.  What do you think are more reasonable steps to be taken to prevent such things - Hordes of cops patrolling the streets looking for smash and grabbers, or people exercising a little common sense and either taking the gear in for the night or parking in a secure garage?
 
 Like most people I've been visiting NY for years and have lived in and around big crime ridden cities all my life.  And I learned very early on that vehicle with out of state plates + vehicle filled with valuable items = stolen property.
