wouldn't miss it. destroyer's one of the five or so best bands making music today and MEC is always solid. looking forward to seeing bejar with a proper backing band.

you know, I hated them when they opened for the New Pornos but the 3 tracks I have from Ruby's are fuckin great, and I'd love to hear em live

that being said, its unlikely I can get out to see the show

this will be an entirely different show than they opened for the NPs. that lineup hadn't played together in ages before going on that tour. this time he's touring w/the band that played on the album, so they should be pretty locked in. and "rubies" is a really, really great album, start to end. that and "streethawk: a seduction" are a couple of legitimate classics, and "this night" is pretty damn great itself.

here's a  short, to the point review of "rubies" from the village voice that captures it pretty well.

I just listened to the latest Destroyer album (it's streaming at the Merge  website ) -- I'm just not in love with it.  If I hadn't already gotten an Editors/stellastarr* tcket, though, I probably would have checked it out.

Meanwhile, I completely spaced on The Oranges Band opening at Black Cat last night....oy.

Lots of choices tonight between DC and Bmore. I'm leaning towards this show. Think it'll sell out? The Black Cat isn't very good at responding to emails...

They'll respond -- last time I emailed about the sell out chances of a show, they responded about 11:45 p.m. that same night.   ;)   Must give 9:30 props for all they do for us in the way of transparency over shows...

Thanks for the link.  I hadn't heard Destroyer yet and I need something to break the tie between Stellastarr and this one.

 Any opinion on the Editors?

They did a short tour in January.  The reviews from the usually cynical blogs were overwhelmingly glowing.  Reportedly, their live show dispels the Interpol comparisons.

I really hated Dan Bejar that night as well. Usually, I'm able to differentiate between the art and the artist and appreciate the former without necessarily appreciating the latter, but Bejar just came across as the world's biggest asshole at that New Pornos concert. I couldn't stand him. It doesn't matter how many positive reviews of the new Destroyer album I read; I can't see myself ever willingly going to see him perform in concert.

 But that's just me.

so yeah, i'm a huge destroyer fan, but it just wasn't happening last nite. if i had never heard them before i'd be like, "i bet this band would make great albums." and they do indeed make great albums, and the live experience is like the album except more underwhelming. it sounded fine and they don't front w/phony energy and i realize it's sort of his "thing" to do the whole disinterested gimmick, but eh. like ggw said, the long, silent breaks made it seem like more of a rehearsal than anything. the best time i saw them was opening for calexico at the black cat a few years ago; this wasn't nearly as good. i'd go see them again because they are one of my favorites, but i wouldn't suggest it to casual fans.

i didn't even bother sticking around for MEC after the disappointment. i had "lost" on tivo, which seemed more important. henry gale, my ass.

destroyer was good when they opened for calexico and black heart procession in 2002, but the best set i saw from them was at the metro cafe with summer hymns on the "streethawk" tour...that was awesome. bejar's voice is a bit tough to handle for lots of people, but then again, so was marc bolan's.
