Love Will Tear Us Apart
« on: May 11, 2007, 06:41:00 am »
The Joy is officially over.

I don't know if this warrents its own thread but I'm in a rush and don't know which one to stick it in so decided just to create a new one. Kind of surprised this made mainstream news.

WTF!!! First The Beautiful South and now this!

Not only does it warrant it's own thread, it warrants it's own website.....A lot of these johnny come lately bands wouldn't exist if it weren't for JD/NO...Interpol to name just one.

I wonder if Peter Hook will do another Monaco project now, I thought that album was excellent.

My first ever band shirt I ever purchased was for Joy Division which I got at Newbury Comics at a wee lad of 16. Not only is Joy Division a great band, along with New Order, but the design of their work was impeccable thanks to Factory designer Peter Seville. They will be missed.

Though one might say it's apples and oranges to compare Joy Division and New Order, I would say that they both revolutionized rock music. It's contrived, but when you go back and listen to stuff like Substance, few bands were successfully able to integrate rock music and dance music the way New Order did. Technique is one of my favorite LPs, it truly is a spectacular record that I think gets overlooked. I think sometimes people overlook the contribution of New Order because maybe they had some "hits" and minor commercial success, plus they have been around forever. Kind of like Sonic Youth. The fact that those guys lasted making music as long as they did after Ian Curtis' death speaks volumes. I think it's cool that they took such a different direction as well. I'm glad I got to see them play "Atmosphere" and "Transmission" when I saw them at Coachella. I think it's a bummer, but they gave us so much great music so it's hard to be bitter.

First CD I ever bought was the double disc New Order - Substance in 1987. Changed my life.  I then bought Joy Division's Substance a year later.  Again, life changing.

Apparently, I came at this with an entirely different angle than everyone else. Spanning their entire career, I agree with every word that others have posted. Every single one of them.

I guess where we have different thoughts is that it always seemed to me that New Order kind of dissolved at one point and then reunited to make Get Ready which I always thought was often panned very unfairly by too many critics. Then they made that God awful follow up which, in my opinion, was a big mistake. Even some of the live footage I saw of them in the past year or two was very disappointing.

Either way, I always perceived the final two albums as being like bonus material or an encore from a truly great and influential band of our time. So, I guess in that regard, reading that New Order broke up just didn't seem too much like news to me.

You know, maybe folks thought the Ramones should call it a day when they did their farewell in 1996...they had been around forever, through thick and thin. Then one day, 3 of them were gone. Never to be seen in concert again, no hope of reunion. ANd to me it's really unsettling because they would be HUGE if they were still around and reunited. Absolutely huge. I think with New Order it's just always been a fact that they've been in the background, but now they're done. Get Ready was a fantastic LP, very underrated. The last one sucked donkeys and was an unfortunate conclusion. In any case, I still think it's kind of appropriate to reflect on their contributions and remember just how great they were. You never know, they might go the way of Talking Heads or Husker Du, and then we'll really never see or hear from them anymore.

one of my favorite concerts of my youth was the New Order show at Merriweather in '89....I wore the pastel american flag shirt to death over the next couple years, which given that I was going to high school in a nice pennsylvania hick burg made for some interesting moments.....

I would agree.  Approximately 95% of the people I said, "Hey, by the way, New Order broke up today" replied with "New Order were still together.  Who knew?"

The cult of Ian Curtis
Anton Corbijn's eagerly-awaited biopic of Joy Division's lead singer opens at Cannes this week. It's just the latest example of the extraordinary fascination that's grown up around the short-lived star, says Andy Gill
