local bands
« on: December 28, 2005, 03:12:00 pm »
My friend's band is from Athens, GA and are tenatively scheduled to play at DC9 in February.  They are The Whigs - indie power-popish - www.thewhigs.com.  I am relatively new to the area and don't know the local scene.  Are there any good local bands that play at DC9 or in the area?

yes, lots of good local bands play DC9 - not sure what your question is - are you just trying to check out if the place is kosher or are you looking for an opening act, or something?

aside from the HORRIBLE, UNORIGINAL name (um, had they ever heard of a band called The Afghan Whigs??), your friends band sounds kind of interesting....I must listen to some songs on the website

I always though Afghan Whigs was a horrible name for a band.

One of the more notable locable bands  that is no more:

 http://www.carlsonics.com/

The first Whigs track I listened to, technology, was pretty great. Second track, violent furs, not bad.

I second that The Whigs is an awful name.

A few months ago on the Afghan Whigs mailing list (yes, it's still active), there was a discussion about this band because of their name. We AW fans may be few, but we're hardcore. Someone on the list went to one of their shows and said they were OK.

Yeah, they have been dogged by the name since inception.  My friend called me asking if I knew a band that would be a good band to play with at DC9 - since they have no following up here.

the remains of the Carlsonics are The Nethers, and all the good indie power pop bands hail from Baltimore...

Have the Whigs opened for Drive By Truckers? Name sounds familiar.

And it seems they have opened for a number of others:

"Give 'em All a Big Fat Lip" marks the first release of any music material for the trio after spending their first two years as a band opening shows for the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Drive By Truckers, Maroon 5, the Killers, Jessica Simpson, Barenaked Ladies, Elf Power, Futureheads, North Mississippi Allstars, Fuel, and Jason Lowenstein.

The Jessica Simpson, Barenaked Ladies, Sarah McCloughlin, Maroon 5 show was their "prize" for winning an Atlanta music contest.  I brought my mother - she thought Jessica was fantastic.
