Bellrays anyone?

I'll be there. I'm guessing this show will be a bit more packed than the last one. They stole the show at Operation Ceasefire.

possible triple bill of the year tomorrow, IMO. the gris gris released one of my favorite records of 2004, and the new one is amazing, and the bellrays and warlocks are always solid.

i saw the bellrays open for the pixies over the summer; hi-energy and fun, but it didn't make me want to rush out and get their cds.
 
 what're their recordings like, and how were they w/ wayne kramer at opcsfire?

 i would have thought that many people at op-ceasefire were going for thievery, making them "the show" ... it's kind of hard for a headliner to "steal the show"

The recent CD's generally underwhelm although "Grand Fury" has moments of brilliance. Bellrays are a live band. I don't think what they do could ever truly be captured by a recording.

Pretty solid show by the Bellrays but with Gris Gris and the Warlocks, it was a strange triple bill. Only caught about 20 min of Gris Gris but really liked what I heard. Melodic at times, messy at others. A nice mix. Bellrays did their funk soul punk brother thing. My complaint about them is they don't make Lisa's voice the focus of their sound. At times, she's wailing away and is completely drowned out by a 50 cent guitar lick. Basement Jaxx put her vocal talents to great use on their last album ("Good Luck") and maybe one of these days, the Bellrays will get wise. Stayed for about 15 min of the Warlocks. Sounded great but the lack of any sort of "performance" forced my mind to wander to thoughts of what I was going to pack for lunch and who to start at RB for my fantasy football team.

great show last night...the gris gris went on early and played for about 30 minutes, and even though the black cat isn't the best venue for the atmosphere they create, they still sounded mysterious and fuzzed-out. the bellrays absolutely tore it up, and lisa kekaula is an unbelievable frontwoman. they transcend all garage/r&b trappings and do something truly original. i can't believe anybody would take thievery corporation over the bellrays.
 
 i like the warlocks, but they sounded flat to me last night. then again, following the bellrays and the gris gris is not an easy task, and those bands will make anybody sound lifeless.
 
 i suppose none of these bands have hispter status, as there were about 120 people there, max.

first of all, thievery didn't headline.
 also, i had never heard thievery before i saw them at opceasefire.
 i couldn't tell any of the bellrays' songs apart.  just a bunch of power chords.  i did like the singer though, she should find some new band members.
