Missed the openers; Secret Machines were awesome, as expected... Kings of Leon okay.  It was a really odd crowd...half rockin' out/half stone-still statues...Here's a non-music story:  The back bar was "seized" by the Secret Service so the Bush twins - Jenna and Barbara - could have a private meet up with the Kings of Leon. BARFFFF. The end of the world is near.

Regulars were banned, of course, and only a handful of the twins pals were admitted.  The Secret Machine guys were visibly surprised and distressed by the news - and when I last saw them - had decided to NOT join the royal princesses.

I'm really surprised and disappointed that the 930 management would agree to that. Since the backstage area is already secured, why not escort them to the green room and leave the public spaces to us proles...evicting the regular customers who look at the back bar as part of the evening's tradition and meet-up place is just wrong. Jenna and Barb should stick with their signature preppy Georgetown clubs - and leave U Street to us liberals and poor people...WTF.

Guess they're not hanging in Crawford with daddy and mommy.  I'm pissed, and will probably be arrested shortly for unpatriotic sentiments.

the bush twins were in the club tonight, but the situation in the backbar had nothing to do with them, and they never went down there at all.  they picked up the tickets that they paid for at will call, declined any special treatment, and watched the show from the crowd like everybody else.  the secret service agents were friendly and as laid back as you could possibly be in that line of work.  all in all, their presence was undetectable.  they left before the show ended.

the band had an after show party.  that's it.  all of the people down there were their guests.

walkonby, distance and hitman were locked in a to the death rock, sissors, paper contest to see who would have to use capitals

bags stole bob moulds karoke machine and she bearman and brennser sang, abba, replacements and sugar tunes all night long.

You missed when sonic and rhett had a crossfire style debate over the merits of certain bands. Rhett lead with this stunning 4 minute soliloqy about the old 97s that had us all on our feet applauding until sonic responded with "you filthy slut!" we declared sonic the winner because comedy trumps logic any day.

The best part, though, was when we gave the bouncer a picture of BadSushi and told him she wasn't allowed in. Man, that was classic...

A Neil Hamburger joke:

Q: What's the difference between George W Bush and Van Helsing...

A: Van Helsing doesn't have two alcoholic daughters.

I only caught the last song by Helio Sequence (if you're going to cover a Beatles song, then it might as well be Tomorrow Never Knows).

I really liked listening to Secret Machines but they weren't really much to watch on stage. I thought they could have worked on the pacing of the setlist. It dragged in places but finished strongly.

I left after about half a dozen Kings of Leon songs. Sorry - not my taste.

I'll refrain from commenting on the special guests. Don't want the SS swooping down on me.  :)

Maybe someone should have told Brendan...KOL forgot to invite the Secret Machines.  I didn't make the story up; a couple of your staffers told me.  If it was a KOL private party, perhaps you could have put the NO ADMIT sign up earlier in the evening so none of us would have planned to meet up down there later...you also have a website updated daily where it might be considerate to post such notices.  I'm sure DC9 appreciated the maneuver, however...

Perhaps next time, you can give the headliner the backbar, and us proles the green room... Last time KOL played 930, they had to mingle will all us nasty fans in the backbar.  They were so put out and snotty, I'm not surprised they asked for privacy...I think they'll get lots of it eventually  :D    :D    :D

Thanks for the settig the record straight.

A few Saturdays ago at Zucchabar, Jenna Bush was there.

The newspapers are all correct: She drinks, smokes and parties a WHOLE lot.

I felt weird being in the same room with her though, I have to admit.  Also, I didn't see what the "big deal" was with her in terms of looks - I found her quite plain.

I'd rather have caught Kiefer Sutherland when he was at Zucchabar though, instead of her.  ;)

 Cheers

But it's so cathartic. Especially when it's about important things, like music and bars.

Oh yeah, one question for the KOL fans.  What's with doing tune up and sound check as your opening chords...(including "testing, testing....")...That was the most unprofessional thing I've seen on the 930 stage since Westerberg lay down behind the drum kit to nap during a solo...
