Shelby Lynne's album that won her best new artist was actually her sixth album. Unfortunately, she tried to go in a more rock oriented approach on her follow up, and it blew. I still think she'll makae strong comeback.
As for the other artist on the list, they simply lacked talent. I think Norah has more talent than them, and will be on the cusp in the resurgance of roots music for several albums to come.

http://www.rockonthenet.com/grammy/newartist.htm[/url]
its a list of the best new artists....
If you were not picked between the mid60's and mid 70's it appears to be a kiss of death.
Sheryl Crow and Sade are the only people who stand out to me at least as exceptions.

Mariah and Christina still appear to be going strong...
Plus, what if Norah's next album only sells a quarter of what this one does. Does that make her a failure? I don't think the album was intended to be a major selling album anyway. Released on the Blue Note jazz label, I think the intention was to find a small, comfortable niche market.
[This message has been edited by Rhett Miller (edited 02-26-2003).]

Mariah is dead and gone, getting dropped by EMI sealed her fate.
Norah Jones sold 5 million albums in the US. If the next sells 1.25 million I doubt she will be heading back to a trailer park.

i'm a bit late into this discussion... and i'm too lazy to read every post, but did anyone recall when Lauryn Hill was this huge deal and she won about 852 grammys for that one album, and then she just kind of dropped off the face of the earth? will that happen with nora jones?
Lauryn Hill was pretty "successful" with the Fugees before her solo project.
Like Jones, just because she "drops off the face of the earth" doesn't mean the work that was recognized was no good.
I think Lauryn Hill's Miseducation and Jone's record are both very solid!

Are you sure? I thought her Unplugged album from last year was well received...but I don't know enough about her to say for certain.

quote:
Originally posted by paige:
i'm a bit late into this discussion... and i'm too lazy to read every post, but did anyone recall when Lauryn Hill was this huge deal and she won about 852 grammys for that one album, and then she just kind of dropped off the face of the earth? will that happen with nora jones?

Someone I know had the best term for those people and I do agree yuppie is a bit dated, but here is the term someone used and I absolutely love it (mostly towards women)..
"resume chasers"

quote:
Originally posted by Celeste:
Also, how much money you make doesn't make one a "yuppie"...it's more like your attitude...however, I think the term is kind of outdated and I, for one, am going to try to come up with something better and more appropriately descriptive to call those oblivious richer than me types
