COMPUTER NERDS -- please gather in this thread
« on: May 14, 2007, 10:02:00 am »
I'm building a PC today for the first time.  I've done various upgrades to previous computers, and I generally know my way around a PC, but I'm definitely not an expert.

 Any tips?

Actually theres isn't much to it.  Just take your standard anti-static precautions.  Make sure to get everything seated in the MB fully and don't force anything.  If you need to force it, you are proabably installing it incorrectly!  On boot, do a quick browse through the BIOS to ensure you have everything set correctly.  Most things should automatically detect, but (for example) if your MB has on board video and you install a stand alone graphics card, you will want to disable the on board chip.  (Sound is another piece of hardware that can fall in this category.)  The only tricky part can be making sure all the front panel connectors are hooked up correctly.  Polarity is important.  Look at the connectors on the ends of the wires and the markings on the MB.  Once again the manuals are your friend!

Basically take your time, read the instructions, and pay attention to details.  If you let the blue smoke out of the wires it is very hard to get it all back inside!

i build myself a computer just a little over a year ago.  it's a great machine - i couldn't find anything with all the specs i wanted, so building myself = getting them all for half the price.  i ordered all my parts from newegg.com and hope you did too, they are really quick and very easy to deal with (returns are completely hassle free).

putting a computer together is rather easy, everything snaps into place.  i put mine together in one evening.  plenty of websites out there that will step you through the process better than i can.

SATA-2 drives were a small headache, but eventually i found the right drivers (need to install them during the RAID setup process when installing WinXP, manufacturer's setup instructions didn't work).  i spent way more time getting Windows config'ed and drivers installed than i did physically putting the machine together.

please feel free to hit me up with any questions, always happy to help.  my one tip: remember there are two power button you need to flip to turn on the machine: the one on the case (the one you'll use on a daily basis to turn it on) and the one on the power supply.  embarrassing story: i actually returned my PSU thinking it was broken because its fan wasn't turning on and it wasn't powering the computer when i hit the "on" button on the case... forgetting that i needed to flip the switch on the back of the PSU first, too  :)   once you flip the PSU's switch, typically it stays in the "on" position permanently.

i'm a geek, and proud of it.

what do you think of this rig:
 <snip>

you should be getting manuals for everything that isn't marked "OEM".  but you'll want to go online anyways for updates.

what do i think of the rig?  nice!

centurion case: hehe, i have virtually the same one.  nice choice, i think they're rather attractive.  only prob was that mine was a sieve - too much ventilation, impossible to get a decent air flow inside.  so i plugged up a few of the holes to restrict air flow a bit.  normally this is a bad idea, but i tested it and results confirmed that my rig is cooler with the plug-ups.  looks like your model only has the one fan, my has two... if thing get hot inside your case, you might want to look into a fan that fits into one of the drive bays.

CPU fan: why are you buying it?  does the CPU not come with a fan?  most do, and are made to manufacturer's specs (i.e. intel approves of and recommends intel fans    :)   )  keep your third-party fan and the heat putty in their boxes and try the included fan first.  might be able to return the other stuff.  i did the same thing when i bought my parts, turned out it was unneeded since the included fan was great.

awesome, any other quirks with the case?  did you have to route the wires any weird ways inside the case?

i'll keep that in mind about the heatsink

don't rub your feet on the carpet and then touch the motherboard    :)

touch some grounded metal before working with sensitive parts (most notably memory chips, motherboard and PCI cards), that will discharge any stored up static electricity you might have on your body.  don't wear clothes that generate static electricity.  you have to be pretty stupid and/or do it on purpose to generate enough static to damage something.  wash your hands and forearms, don't towel off too vigorously (but enough to dry your hands, leaving arms a slightly damp is ok), touch a big chunk of exposed metal and off you go.

Always grasp a metal part of the computer chassis with your bare hand before you touch anything inside.  I just make a habit of tapping the bottom before I put my hand inside.

Also, try not to work on your computer in a carpeted area and always disconnect the AC power cord from the CPU while working on the machine.

True.  I laughed aloud to GGWs response to xneverwherex in the Mormon thread as well.
